Canadians and maybe Mexicans: Do you not appreciate being called American?

I am Canadian. I was born in the US. I lived there until I was 23 and moved to Canada to marry. I have lived here since 1984. The funniest thing is I find in terms of politics, Canadians quite often lump themselves together with Americans. Even I am guilty of this. We is a term that refers to We Americans, and it's used often. Maybe it's just because we all live on one continent. As a Canadian, and having worked hard to get my citizenship status here, I really don't want to be lumped politically together with the Americans. I'm going to get a bunch of hatemail from Americans now telling me it's a good thing I moved out of the US. Fine, I'm glad I did too. I think the American political atmosphere stinks and it wrecked living there for me. When I lived there, I never voted for a winning president and I still don't agree with your choices. I might use the term WE from time to time, but I only do it out of the mass social behavior. I usually hate myself for doing it. I am Canadian and happy to be Canadian. In Canada, we don't persecute people when they come to the border and want to go skiing or otherwise vacationing if they are from the US. Now I am being told I will soon need a passport from Canada to cross into the country of my birth. Probably I don't deserve my birthright but to me its sad that the US doesn't even trust its own next door neighbors enough to let a simple picture driver's license suffice like it has for years. I am Canadian. I don't appreciate being lumped with Americans because we share the same landmass. French people don't get called Spanish or Italian, right? So...what's the difference?

I am a Canadian and hate being associated with the war mongering USA. I never refer to us as we as I try and stay as far from the USA as possible. I used to like to travel in the states, now with the heightened security and having to have a passport etc. it is just too much of a hassle. Besides Canada has a lot of great places to travel to.

I don't think Canadians are lumped in with Americans. I've been to Toronto a few times and I definitly felt like an outsider. I don't know what it is, it looks very much American over there, it's just ...different somehow. I don't really have anything against Canadians. The majority of Canadians are more liberal I suppose. It's unfortunate that you have to work that hard to get your citizenship in Canada. I wish it was easier for people who do not like our elected officials or our goverment in general to cross the border and live in Canada.

I think it used to be easier, before the Vietnam war when so many tried to jump draft. And with security problems nowadays, it's much harder.

I hear ya! It's like residents from the U.S are called Americans, but in fact, Americans are the people that live on the continents of south and north america. It's unfortunate that the us citizens took that name, like if America belonged to them. I am a Canadian and proud to be, and i too don't want to be linked with their political issues and so on.

You're right in a way. We are in the Americas. However by using the term American we do get linked. I'd rather not.
