Why can you shut your eyes but not your ears, nose, touch, taste etc

Imagine we could close our nose and ears. Then we would never have to clean them cos when our eyes close they are getting cleaned.
We woulld live in a world of no ear and nose picking which would be very practical but sometimes it is good to see someone picking their nose when they think no one is watching.
I am actually appauled that no one found this discussion and responded to it. Well one other person did but I think this is very interesting and people may have alot of theories.
As you might not notice I myself don't actually have a theory and all I have said is that it would be cool if we could.

Thank you, I never knwo wh ypeople dot write back to my discussions either. Thank you for reminding me about this one tho, I had forgotten to respond to the last person. People couple still pick their noses by opening their nose flaps if they had them. Im not sure if your nose and ears would clean themselves when closed, I dont see why not!

Maybe ear wax would do the trick. Ye, maybe it's because i don't post much, also i'm not sure how many friends I have compared to everyone else. I just do mylotting in my spare time, I was a bit of an addict for a while but have grown out of that now.

I wonder though if we owuld have seepage from them like tears. I wonder if you heard something horrible would gunk come out your ears.
I think it is because you don't seem to be too active. YOu have a very low number of postings for how long you have been here. Maybe you become the forgotten one often. Lol.
Don't worry I rememeber you!

Your eyes are so sensitive that they have to be continuously replenished with saline (tears). The eyelid is basically the brush to distribute tears across the eye, a shield against blinding lights, and a shield against alien objects that might harm your eye. Ears and noses aren't so sensitive, but they have protective provisions as well. That's why your nostrils point down and the entrance to the inner ear is deep inside the outer ear. And your hearing and smell must always be "turned on" as safety mechanisms.

Thank you for your answer. What you said is all very true. I wonder why you have to sleep with your eyes closed and not your ears instead, that way you could still see danger and smell it just now hear it.

You're right, but if we had the transparent lids also that would solve that problem

So your eyes won't dry out. :P But seriously, if you're not completely alert, something could damage your eyes, but your ears are at a lower risk. Just my guess though.

Perhaps the eyes have eyelids so as to protect them, seeing as their such an integral part of the human body, as well as being very sensitive. Also, they led directly to the brain

Interesting idea. I was asking people he other day if they knew and someone did suggest perhaps it's to protect them. I think tha's probably the answer as they are so delicate.

This is an interesting question. Now, my grandfather has hearing aids - and he can shut off his ears! :p When he doesn't want to listen to what I have to say, I notice he turns down the hearing aid and just goes, "yep, yep, yep." This way he thinks he is being polite but he is totally ignoring you!

exactly... what's interesting is that next week I take grandpa in to have his hearing re-tested and to get new digital hearing aids. Now I am beginning to wonder - just how much do I want him to hear anyway? :p

That's nice of you to be looking after your Grampa like that. I know what you mean, my Granny is rather hard of hearing but sometimes she surprises us with what she can here when we think she can't!

Scientifically, eyes don't really close. It's our eyelids which cover the eyes so that eventually we would fall asleep. :) The moment that we are asleep, the rest of the body parts won't stop functioning. We just don't realize it because when we are asleep, we are unconscious or unaware of what's happening in our surroundings. :)

But if that is the case, how do we wake up to our alarm clock s going off in the morning?
