Do you mind if the cashier doesn't have 5/10/25 cents change to give you?

Speaking of counting change and forgetfulness(other discussion. I just had to post this before I forgot. LOL)I've been encountering cashiers a lot lately that doesn't have like, 5, 10, or 25 cents in the register and they usually ask if it's okay if they're short that amount. At first I really didn't mind, it's only some cents but my boyfriend has been noticing too and he cooked up this idea that it may be a gimmick that some cashiers are doing coz at the end of the day, when there's an overage in their register against the receipts, they usually keep the the extra..Hmm, even so, I just don't want to make a scene over 25 cents. But what my boyfriend said really got me thinking..I mean, if we're short 25 cents to pay for our stuff, the cashier minds this but then it's okay if it's the other way around? What do you think? Has this happened to you before?

Here in Ontario most stores have a little bowl on their counter called "give a penny, get a penny". Customers who don't want their pennies can put them in there and if the cashier is short change she/he can take it from there or if the customer is short change (so that the cashier doesn't have to make a lot of change) the customer can take it from there. This avoids the situation you are talking about. I agree that what is happening to you is a scam. Don't put up with it.

Oh, that is a good idea. I wish some store would have something like that here.

I was surprised when I told my mother about it and she never heard of such a thing. She is an hour away from me in the big city of Toronto. But then she probably doesn't go into too many convenience stores. Thanks for the best response.

Where on earth do you shop that cashiers get to keep the overages from the drawer? I've been a cashier for quite a while in several places, and keeping the overages is NEVER ok...they get deposited with everything else. My register runs out of change sometimes. I work at a Target store, and we're not allowed to go get change ourselves- there are people who we call who are supposed to bring us change. Well, sometimes on busy days, I call for change 2, 3, sometimes 4 times, and an hour later they still haven't brought me my stinking quarters. Personally, I think our store needs to hire better people for these positions, because it's really frustrating. I've never shorted a customer on their change though, although a couple times they have had to wait for someone to bring the change over. But if the store you go to is constantly short on change, you might consider talking to a manager. That's not good customer service.

In my home country. :) That's what I like about the US. Most of your stores have good customer service. In my home country, you just have to deal with those cashiers or you can talk to the manager but you should expect to wait AGES before they could finally get to you.

I have never heard of such a thing and it has not and never will happen to me because I would have the manager get change if the cashier couldn't.

Really even for 5 or 10 cents? I wanted to do that before but like I said, it holds up the line and people would be staring and I'm really not comfortable with that. But when I'm with my boyfriend, I let him do all the talking to the cashier. LOL.

5 or 10 cents, I wouldn't care, but 25? What store till doesn't have 25 cents in change in it? It sounds like a gimmick to me.

I totally agree with the response from u~. 5 or 10 cents aren't so much to care, but 25 is too much. I also think it's a kind of gimmick.

Hi Natalie Never though about that before. For me is fine if the cashier didn't give me 5/10/25 cents change. Maybe some cashier do that for the extra money that they will get in the end of day, that so cruel for me.But we can see in the cashier machine if there any coins or not. And sometimes i bring my coin to pay them, so they don't need to give me any change.

I would suggest that if it's always the same shop with the same clerc person why not just count your change the next time ? If it's missing a lot, make a complaint about it to the manager. Or maybe just go to another shop.

No, it's not the same shop, just some random cashier from different shops.

At the first I really did not mind, it's only some cents but in my country sometimes the counter prepare the candy for changing cent when there's an overage in their register against the receipts, they usually do not keep the the extra.

Erm, sometimes, if the cashier does'nt have 5 cens I don't mind about this because I think that value is too small to me but if 10 and 25 cents I keep it and save for my monthly budget. But, sometimes, we don't care about the value like that because we always think that the money is not enought to buy something. But, if we have a large amount of money and we only need the cents for sometimes to buy anything for last minute we really want the money like 5,10 and 25 cents.

sometimes i do, sometimes i don't. it depends on the situation. sometimes, when i'm really in need of coins, o would really buy something to have smaller denominations but when the cashier has nothing smaller, i feel bad of course and i demand my change. it's my right, isn't it? and what's the use of spending my money if i don't get what i want to get.

I've never had this happen and they're obligated to give you your full change back.I wouldn't like it at all if it happened frequently and yes when the customer would be sort they wouldn't accept that.

i've never heard of this before.I have worked in a supermarket before and i noticed that there are lot of people who give too much money so all the small amounts of cents will go to their pockets. It could be a cause for not having 5/10/25 to change. We had that a lot,but a good supermarket must have a back up for extra cents.

personally i don't mind if they don't have a 5/10/25 cents change. i wouldn't waste my time for just that and have a long line after me just for waiting for a change that wouldn't hurt me. it's ok if they don't really have the exact change it won't bankrupt me. and whatever they do with it, it's up to their conscience.

I always hang around for my change... I don't care if it is 5c I want that money. I place all my 5c & 10c coins in a jar & I don't miss the money. I then later on take it to the bank & so far have had $180 in change deposited into my account this way. I have not missed the money at all & have really loved the fact I have saved money without even trying.

I do mind... especially if im short..LOL. They mind if we are short in paying them. Here in my country, some establishments especially groceries give you candies in exchange if they dont have 5/10/25 cents.

i've encountered cashiers who say they don't have change. i'm thinking, why don't they just ask the cashier beside them. i really get annoyed when they say they're sorry that their change is lacking. i don't think it's an excuse. they should find a way to give us our exact change. that is so true, it's okay from them to not give us exact change but they will not let us walk away if we don't have 5 or 25 cents. unfair.

Yap, it happened several times before. I even make it a point to have extra small denomination coins in my wallet. There was even a time that some stores here in our country gives candies instead of giving you change, that's extra income on their part and they can sell their candies without knowing it. lol. funny huh?

It is one thing if a register doesn't have a penny in it but if a cashier doesn't have a quarter, I am sure there are nickels and dimes that will add to a quarter. I think your boyfriend is right. Some cashiers may do this.
