How do they get so many replies?

Painting your toenails.. how often do you do it? - Painting your toenails.. how often do you do it? Is this a frivolous topic?

This is actually a tongue in cheek type discussion. You know you've seen them and probably responded to them. I know I am guilty of one or two myself. The discussions that have absolutely no meaning what so ever. How many of you paint your toenails? Do you pluck your eyebrows? What color pants are you wearing? These discussions have no point. But yet they receive hundreds of replies. I am not putting anyone down for starting the discussion, nor am I saying you shouldn't reply. My question is this: What is it about these discussions that almost demands a response? You see more thought provoking discussions every day with few to no replies, but these discussions about when you last walked your dog get hundreds. It was something I was wondering myself and thought I would throw it out there and see what fellow Mylotters thought. So what do you think? What is the secret of the impulse that drives us to respond to these discussions?

I think these types of discussions are nice and easy to respond to when you don't feel in the mood for deeo and meaningful answers. I am also a little wary of them now though as I have answered a few of these lately and found my points ahve been taken off me, so I'm sticking with my friend's discussions form now on I think unless it looks like a really interesting discussion froma plausable person.

I tend to stick to my friends discussions as well. I am afraid of posts being deleted as well.

No, I do not think its because of silly stuff or easy to answer. I posted one discussion and got only 4 responses and the other mylotter posted the same discussion as mine and got 100 of responses. Now, how's that happens?

I think it may also have to do with how many friends you have on mylot. If all your friends receive emails that you have started a discussion and all of them respond and you have 100 friends then you will get lots of responses no matter what type of discussion you start whether it be silly or serious.

A lot of those questions that ask about a person's daily lifestyle, don't really require that much thinking and are easier to answer. Although I am guilty of answering a couple of those no brainer questions, I try to stay away from them as much as possible, cause I have been noticing those are usually the ones that get deleted first. Even in most cases I can sometimes come up with a paragraph or two to answer them with I will try and keep myself from answering them, and look for more thought provoking discussions.

I worry as well that they may get deleted. It is so hard to tell which will and which won't.

Hi monkey, when are you ever going to get tired from rocking, LOL! Now, as for your discussion, I can only think of two reasons: One, the poster have huge friends on their list. There are many members here who have friends that's close to 1000. Out of 1000, you more or less get at least 100 responses. The other reason, most members prefer to respond to silly threads rather than the more serious and sensitive topics. It must have something to do with the everyday stresses they are facing and prefer to read light discussions. When I post a topic that I painstakingly penned down, I got at least 40 to 50 responses only. When I posted a thread that just come right out of my mind, I got close to or more than 100 responses. I think I will observe around and see what silly stuff I can post, LOL.

I never tire from rocking bunny, it keeps me from going insane !! Thanks for hopping by with your response, friends can play a very important part as well... good luck with your silly posts. How about a post asking how people prefer their carrots.. raw or cooked? Since you're a bunny, I'll imagine you prefer raw !!

Oh I have seen many discussions like that and yes I have responded to some. I think posts like that get alot of responses because they are usually questions that just about anyone can relate to. Some of those questions get tons of replies. I suppose it's just kind of interesting sometimes to see how many people will respond.

It is interesting to see, sometimes, it is a question that there are so many answers that are exactly the same. I see your point though.

I think it's simple for people to reply discussions like that. I have seen newbies generally answer in one or two lines and they find this kind of discussion very good to reply. Infact people who have spent time on mylot hate to reply oneliners may be it's discussions or their responses. Answering your question, "What is it about these discussions that almost demands a response?" it's questions easiness which lead people to reply it. They don't have to think anything extraordinary to reply this kind of discussions.

i think the simple factor plays a lot into the amount of replies as well.

Because they're easy to reply to - they don't require much thought and you can reply to them quickly! Also most people quite enjoy survey type questions anyway. I sometimes respond to those types of discussions because maybe I'm just not in the mood for talking about anything more "serious" - sometimes I'm happy to talk about how often I pluck my eyebrows or paint my nails or whatever. Although I've noticed a tendency to look down on those type of questions I think sometimes they're quite fun. I don't want to spend all my time on myLot being serious about everything. That would be pretty depressing! The only thing I would say is that there is an awful lot of them and if I'm in the mood for a more "weighty" discussion I'm often struggling to find one to answer.

that is one of my own concerns, as there are many days I cannot find any discussions worth responding to. I don't mind the once in a while either. Like I said, I have answered them. Just not all the time.

Hi, actually I also faced the same situation like you. Simply wondering what kind of discussion that might catch the eyes of the mylotters. Sometimes, I also notice the discussion that been started by me only got few post replies but when the others got started with the same issue they got tons. I used to wonder with these questions. At last I got noticed that why they got such intentions from the same discussion of mine. Well, some of them play the words to be such interesting topic although for the truth the discussion is absolutely the same. Some of them use some more nice opening words and many more. I do not blame the other mylotters on this. It is up on our creativity to make a discussion that we bring on become more interesting and be more valuble to the others. :)

I guess I only responded to a few, in which I know can be counted in my two hands. Others I know have been deleted too, and there are others of which I wish I shouldn't have posted to. I only posted to them, to add some points in my post counts, and I don't expect to earn from it. Because I know that these discussions are not in the qualifications of mylot's policies, and that the poster's main goal is only to earn more money and not to help the community. The reasons for this is because they are much too easy to give our opinions at, and others get tired of too much thinking that they get the instance of looking for other topics that can be answered easily. THere's also those who prefer to make one or two-lined responses, in which they are more qualified for this types of discussions. The best is to make good quality discussions, for it to attract good quality responses. Put those nonsense topics away, and give them nonsense answers too!;)

I've seen some here who use/take advantage of their friends' eagernes in posting at their discussions, in which I see irrelevant and also know that it is just a made up story just for them to attract more response. I don't have anything against them, but, I know how to disctinguish the truth from falsely made up stories!;)

This is basically a group discussion type of site. One user starts a discussion and there may be so many responses for that discussion and sometimes there won't be any reply also. Someone has to start some sort of a discussion. In fact Mylot is allowing all users to post whatever they want and users are doing the same. The discussion may be silly and may not be having any meaning. But this is also one type of OPINION/KNOWLEDGE sharing.

yes it is, but sometimes Mylot deletes certain posts. I fret that sometimes I may respond to one of these posts and then it will be deleted. That's one of my main reasons for steering clear of them.

Misheleen. I think that some discussions get many replies because of one simple factor, their simplicity. Imagine this. A person scouring for discussions to answer a discussion as quickly and as easily as possible with the least resistance or simply a person seeing anything that catchs their eye and is in the mood to respond to discussions. Why would this person want to trouble him/her self in actually having to think? Thinking is too hard for many. When people come on myLot, they want relaxation. They want to talk about nothing for the most part. I myself find myself swaying to more thought provoking questions, but I am one not to really spend much time on myLot overall. This is important to keep in mind because as one spends more and more time on here I don't think that they have the desire to think.

In addition to that, some discussions get many replies because they are clear and easy to read and understand. This is instrumental when one is setting up their own personal discussions.

I think you have two things going on there. People who make it a goal to respond to x number of discussions each time they sign on. By the time you get close to your goals sometimes you want to find something shallow and quick. Then also (and maybe the same people) trying to start a certain number of discussions per session causes people to resort to dog walking, toe nail polishing ideas. Maybe there could be two categories of friends lists... quick and easy versus substance. ????

Well in my opinion.. you can receive so many replies if you have many friends here in mylot.. especially if they are actively responding to your discussions. also, your reputation./rating is a big factor.. the higher the rating, the better.. just like yours.. right? also, recent or current events discussions are more likely to be responded since many people can relate to it.. i think.. thats what i think. best of luck.

I think that these kinds of discusions are a draw because they are easy to answere and don't cause any friction. One dosen't have to think very hard and they can be posted to just to get the numbers if you know what I mean.

yeah... that is how im thinking right now how to get the attentions or symphy of others in your post/thread... as of now... most of my replies got only maximum of 5 or even less... too bad for me... secret? i guess no secret at all this is the matters of how many people online on mylot staying on the site... the tendency is that when u post your topic others is also posting at the same time... so your topic will we on the down list... after few mins... no one will read the nxt page of the list... so making topics should be interesting for all ages and genderless... target your reviewers and focus on what keep them on the thread.
