I do not believe that you have to read the bible in order to be a good person and get to heaven. However, I do believe that you have to read the bible in order to be a good Catholic (or to be a Catholic at all, really). How can you truly call yourself a Catholic if you have not read for yourself the book your religion is based on? How better to know the word of God than to read it? The written word is very different than just listening to sermons at church and I think all Catholics and Christians should make reading the entire bible a priority in their lives.

I don't believe that the only way to be a good Catholic is to read the Bible. The Bible is sacred that I know and respect. But to say that to be a good catholic you ought to read it is pushing your beliefs on others. I respect people who read and preach the word of God but do not judge others as not being a good Catholic if they don't read the scriptures.Mainly the word of God is to love thy neighbor as thy self so I think that if we follow this rule we are doing God's wish and we can be considered good Catholics. Thank you for sharing. :)

sorry fellas, but i disagree with all your comments about salvation, a person could not be saved by his faith alone. he needs to be with Christ, to be in Christ's body. Christ is the head of His Church, Col. 1:18, which He will be saving on the judgment day. you should be in His flock, John 10:9 " I am the door; anyone who comes to the fold through me will be safe..."
eternal life or salvation can only be acquired thru Christ " now glory be to God... because of His masterplan of salvation for the church through Jesus Christ." Eph 3:20-21

The bible is our instruction book. Would you try to make a complicated dish with out the recipe. The bible is our recipe book. You read a math book in order to understand math. Why not the bible to understand God and how he wants us to live. How do you know what you are being told is true. Only if you study your bible will you know The Lord Jesus and wht he expect from us.

Comunication is a two-way street. We say we communicate with God when we pray. But isn't it that it is only us who do the communicating?
To talk to God, we pray. And to hear and understand God, we read the Bible or attend the mass or however we call it in our religion.
And in doing so, we get to understand God better. The Bible teaches us to become good people, and in becoming good...we shall be given the chance to go to heaven.

Thank you. Precisely why I said "will be given the chance to go to heaven" because i believe that only the selected ones will be able to enter the heavenly gates.

I don't think you have to read the bible in order to get to heaven. Actions speak far louder then words and that is what matters. I've known many people who have read the bible but do not lead a life that will get them into heaven by any stretch of the imagination. The Devil can read the bible, won't guarentee him a spot up there either. It's what you do that counts the most. It might be nice to read the bible so you know it first hand but that is your choice.

Whew! This one is a very hot and controversial topic. Since Heaven or Eternal Life, depending on your religious beliefs, is what most of us strive for in this life. In my opinion, I don't think that its based on religion or reading any special book, but rather on the life we live and good deeds that we do.
Since most of the religions have the same principles. Helping others and those that are less fortunate and Having Faith, the vehicle you take to get to Heaven or Eternal Life is not as important as getting there. So just do the right things, whatever they are for you.

Exactly my point. How it can be to figure out that we only need to do good on earth. Isn't it what the Bible is preaching? Do good on earth and love thy neighbor as thy self?

What i believe is that there is no religion that can save us from any sins, but if we have faith in God the Almighty, we can be saved and if we repent for our sins honestly and with all our hearts, that i think can makes us go to heaven and not just reading the bible.

I have always believed in the golden rule that don't do unto others what you don't want others do unto you. If one wants to be treated well one has to treat others well. :)

I do not believe you "need" to read the Bible in order to get into heaven. I do believe you need to believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord or you will not go to heaven. I believe it is a very good idea to read the Bible, for the fact that if you do not know what is does and does not say, how would you know what God does or does not want you to do. Staying on the same subject, when attending church, how would you know that your preacher is not leading you astray if you do not read your Bible and know what it says?

Thank you. Jesus said I am the Way, the Truth and the Life noone goes to Father except through Me. And I believe that through Him He meant loving and treating thy neighbors with kindness.

Thank you for the response. Isn't that the Bible teaches us to do good on earth and love thy neighbor as you love thy self? Isn't it that what's the Bible is preaching? I have seen a lot of people who read the Bible they even conduct Bible studies but their actions are opposite of what they read. So I'd rather follow the greatest commandment of God about loving thy neighbor as thy self. Please don't get me wrong that I don't encourage people to read the Bible. If they want to that is good if they don't want to then it's their choice. Live and let live we do not have to push upon others what we believe in.
