Hi quickie32, for paid version, you could try Kaspersky and Symantec antivirus. Both the two are very effective in terms of scanning and detecting any malicious viruses. For free-version, you can try AVAST and AVIRA. Currently, I am using Avira AntiVIr Personal Classic Edition. I have been using this for over a longer period of time. Since using this software, I have never had problems at all with regards to the overall function and system performance of my machine. Otherwise, I am very satisfied with its performance. It updates regularly and can be scheduled at your most convenient time. It is very light on resources. It does not use a lot of memory. It does not slow down your computer. Overall, it does its jobs pretty well. This can be downloaded at www.free-av.com
Hope this would help to you in any way.
Have a great day!

i've tried trend-micro, AVG, norton but i still prefer ESET NOD32 antivirus system. it's small, doesn't take up memory, it does scanning real-time in the background. very effecient. but it's not free...
try it~~~ www.nod32.com. if i'm not mistaken, it has received some awards too...

Well in my honest oppinion the best is norton if you have the resources to run norton. It is a memory hog and will slow your system down but for protection it is the best. Next I would like to recomend McAfee

I belive the world most powerful and low memory consumer is AVG by GRISOFTS they gives you he platforms where you can not only safe you pc form some of the dangerous virus like torjan, i.warm etc but they also checks your network applications from your LAN and internet some times some of the hackers usally monitaring your system and you are unable to view them they use to hijack you data and system by turning of the some of the firewall softwares and antivirus
hence the AVG with the latest version of 7.5 is the best on the today dates if you keep updating it
