Baby with chicken pox.

My little girl is only 6 moths old, but has contracted chicken pox. She can't tell us, but we can sense that the itching is driving her crazy! We have spoken to the doctors, who say all the usual things about keeping her temperature down and covering her in calomine lotion to ease it, but my poor baby is still going nuts and can't sit still. She's also off her food. My wife and I were both much older when we had it, and I don't know anybody else who had chicken pox this young. Have your children ever had chicken pox or something similar at such a young age? Can you offer any hints or tips on how to make her more comfortable? We have only had about 3 hours sleep in the past 2 days, so we're ready to try anything to settle her down.

i had chicken pox when i was 7 years old.it is better to have chicken pox at a young age than to have at a older age because at younger age there are less complications.don't worry about that.it will last only for few more days.it is better to consult a doctor.

Many people have told me that it's better to have it when you're young. I guess we'll just wait it out.

Hey, i'm so sorry your little girl has to go through this, but at least she's young enough that she won't have to deal with the severity of it... Here's a couple of things you can do, home remedies that worked on my baby brother. any kind of vitamin E oil helps speed up the healing Give her a bath in oatmeal - i know it sucks, but it takes away a lot of the itch, oh also bathing her in neem leaves - health food stores carry them, fresh, it helps with itching... Oh, if you rub honey on the spots, it'll help them heal faster, but it might not be good considering she's so small..... scratch that i guess.... Also, here's something i found, might be worth trying... Mix ½ tspn of Baking soda in 1 glass of water. Sponge the person with this. When soda dries on the skin it controls the itchiness and irritation. Home Remedies for Chicken Pox Chicken Pox treatment using Brown Vinegar The use of brown vinegar is one of the most important among the several home remedies found beneficial in the treatment of chicken pox. Half a cup of this vinegar should be added to a bath of warm water. This will relieve the irritation of the skin. Chicken Pox treatment using Pea Water Green pea water is another effective remedy for relieving irritation of the skin. The water in which fresh peas have been cooked can be used for this purpose. Chicken Pox treatment using Carrot and Coriander A soup prepared from carrots and coriander has been found beneficial in the treatment of chicken pox. About 100 gm of carrots and 60 gm of fresh coriander should be cut into small pieces and boiled for a while. The residue should be discarded. This soup should be taken once a day Chicken Pox treatment using Herbal Tea A mild sedative herbal tea can also prove beneficial in the treatment of chicken pox. This tea can be prepared from any of the herbs like chamomile (babunah), basil (tulsi), marigold (zergul) and lemon balm (billilotan). A little cinnamon (dalchini), honey, and lemon may be added to this tea. 1t should be sipped slowly several times a day. The last few found here - http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Chicken-Pox.html Hope this helps hun...... Sorry for the trouble your going through again, it's hard with a 7 year old, even harder as they get smaller...

Thanks for all the information. Everyone tells us that it's better to get it earlier, as the symptoms are less severe, but my wife tends to disagree!

no problem, it is better for the kid in a way to get them younger, though in another way your wife is right, it's much harder on you both now, than it would be if the little one was a little older. Hope she gets better real fast, oh, you don't need bathing oatmeal, just regular oatmeal works hun.

So sorry to hear about your little bundle of joy, Rhino. There isn't much you can do, but you should make sure she has plenty of fluids and avoid clothing if the weather (temperature) is suitable. As others have said an oatmeal bath is probably better for controlling the itching than calamine. One thing we use to counter itching is Tee Tree Oil but you would have to check before using it on a baby. We find it extremely effective in controlling itch from mosquito and sand fly bites. I know it is a trying time for you two, but try to work in shifts so that you each get some sleep. Bubs will respond to YOUR temperament. If you are calm and giving her assurance, she will settle better.

I replied to an earlier response that a day off from work yesterday really helped recharge our batteries! I help as much as I can through the day, but at night she absolutely refuses to settle for me. She always wants mama during the night. I've tried countless times, but my wife gets up anyway as she can't sleep if she hears the baby crying.

I'll certainly try that. Bathing oatmeal is hard to come by in England!

The baking soda may dry her skin and make her itch worse. You don't need bathing oatmeal. Read my reply and you will see.

Calomine is not the best thing. Oatmeal lotion is better. If you don't have that you can throw some oatmeal in the blender or food processor and grind it up. Throw some in a tepid bath and let her soak in it. Me and my daughter had the chicken pox at the same time - she was under 2 at the time. Also put socks on her hands to help prevent scarring should she try to scratch. You can also try some camomile tea to help her sleep a bit better. It won't hurt her. Don't worry about her food intake; she'll make up for it. Just make sure she stays hydrated. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll give them a try. I'm not sure if she'll have camomile tea though, she's very fussy and stubborn about what she likes!

Have you tried giving her an oatmeal bath? use warm water not too hot but not cold enough to chill her. these seem to relieve itching for awhile. You guys need to sleep in shifts and take turns caring for your daughter before your both to exhusted to function. Bena drly cream is a good itch reliever but I'd check with the pharmacist about using it on a baby.. Good luck atleast they are over in a few days and they only catch them once.

I'm off work tomorrow, so I should be able to give my wife a well-earned break. I'll look into the oatmeal bath (she might eat it!) Thanks.

I was about to type oatmeal bath too. That's what my mother did for us, plus airing out the skin, clothes will just irritate it even more.

Awww poor little tyke... chicken pox are miserable. rhinoboy, I know it's not much comfort during your sleepless nights but you'll be glad to get this childhood illness done and out of the way. When my kids had it, I had mothers bringing their kids over, hoping they'd get it too! It's awful to get it as an adult. If she can or is scratching (or trying to), do make sure you keep her fingernails clipped or, if you have to, you can put those little baby mitts on her hands so she won't scratch herself up. The non-colloidal oatmeal baths every 3-4 hours do seem to help with the itch (Aveeno makes the oatmeal specific for those baths that you can put right in the water... if you're using other oats, you can tie them in a cheesecloth or gauze and drop that in the water). Cool room temperature and cool cloths can also offer some comfort. I was able to use antihistamine (Benadryl) for my girls because they were young school-age when they both got it and, it's true, it really does provide some relief, if it gets to that point. Is she feverish and needing acetaminophen or anything too? I guess the only "good news" is that the contagious period usually lasts about a week and you're done with that part as the blisters crust over (sorry... gross, I know). Let me know where I should should your very strong coffee, friend ;)

She's being a real little trooper and is so brave! She's getting quite iritable when she needs to sleep, but most of the day she just wants her mammy! Luckily, she doesn't seem to be running a temperature and isn't feverish (although she's sweating buckets whenever she does sleep!). I long for silence and my (unoccupied!) bed, but I guess that can wait until next week!

Hello,it is very worriest thing if kids are disturbed with their health and your daughter is too young to have chicken pox i never heard that it is effective at this age also,no need to worry she will be allright in few days, you just see her temperature come down as doctor advised and please try some of this which iam going to suggest you---- keep your child always clean and even yourselves and your home, dont give her a bath for atleast 5days,allow her sleep on a neat and clean white coloured bedsheetsand the clothes should be of white colour, feed her with those foodstuffs which cools her body and finally apply the paste of well washed leaves of neem with haldhi in it which controls the itching and the rashes will vanlsh off soon and dont forget to take dctors advise every time.

Our home and ourselves are always spotlessly clean. Unfortunately 'the paste of well washed leaves of neem with haldhi in it' is not readily available where we live. I guess we'll just keep using the calomine lotion and wait then. Thanks for your response.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter hun, fortunately she will get over this quickly and will be fine in a little while. Calomine lotion is probably the best thing for her right now, and try to keep her in cotton vests as it is a natural fabric and more comfortable for her. She may be a little too young for Calpol, but it might be worth checking with the doctor. It would help bring her temperature down and help her to settle a little more comfortably. I hope she is fine again soon hun

We're keeping her in cotton baby-grows and smothering her in calomine lotion. We're also putting socks on her hands to stop her from scratching (she's outgrown her scratch-mits!) She can and is having calpo, but despite being sugar free it tends to send her hyper!

There is no cure for chicken pox. You just have to wait for it to subside because if you attempt to cure it and it subsides prematurely, it might swell inside the body and might be more dangerous. It could last for a week. My parents said don't give a bath when there is a chicken pox. I don't exactly know the reason why. It is also known that once you have it you won't have it anymore in your entire life. Better have a more credible opinion or advice from doctors.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other remedies to help her except for maybe letting her soak in her little tub if she likes it. My son got Chicken Pox at 6 months also. He was lucky because he was too young to scratch so they didn't spread too much. Sorry you are going threw this, but at least when it's over, it won't happen again.

She does like her bath, so I think we'll extend bath time until she's better. She can't scratch properly, but she's having a good try! I did think that it's better for her to have it now, as we wouldn't have a hope of stopping her from scratching if she was much older.

Playing connect the dots with calmine lotion and frequent baths with oatmeal. These should ease the itching and she should be over it really soon at this stage.

You must have her gotot he doctor so that she can have some medicines to take for relief, and to stop early if its only one day then you can still give her some medicines which will stop or kill the bacteria itself.

There isn't medicine to make chicken pox go away. It is a virus and has to run its course.
