I'm a citizen of India. English doesn't come natural to us as we have Hindi as our prime language and then regional languages. English has always been secondary language in schools in India. ( I am sharing view about time when I cleared my high school that is 1995.) I'm at mylot to improve my language and grammar too.
While looking through the discussions and responses I notice that the standard of English varies hugely. Do you think poor written English is acceptable; are there times when good English still matters? It would be interesting to give your age in your reply. Do you find that many a people on mylot make lot of grammatical mistakes. ( I'm one of them. lolz) Is it really hard for you to then understand it ???

It's explained in mylot's onformation that users would be participating from all over the world and may have some problems in there language of communication from grammer and spelling point of view so we all have been requested to overlook this and forgive them for the mistakes occur.
All the best from oarnamav.

Hi,
Of course, for those for whom English is not their first tongue, it is understandable that errors occur and as long as the meaning is clear it is not a problem.
You only make three minor mistakes in your question; don't leave a space after a bracket and don't use multiple question marks, so I think your English is very good.
As Aristotle notes, the degree of accuracy required depends on the subject under discussion and when discussing scientific, philosophical or religious or other such matters accuracy of expression is a virtue. Correct use of grammar aids accurate expression and is therefore desirable though not always necessary.
all the best urban

I'm fine with having some mistakes, I know speaking another language is hard so if you just do the best you can I'm fine with it.

for years, chinese english teachers have emphrasized too much on grammar points, which makes english studying for students dull and less flexible.as time goes by,we find that listening and speaking plus reading comprehension counts more than grammar does.after all language is for communication isnt it?now these skills have been put in the first place for our english study.

I don't think spelling and grammar is important. What is important is that people can understand you, and you can understand them. In other words, communication is the important thing. I can understand you very clearly. I do think myLot will help your spelling and grammar. It doesn't do any harm to improve it, but don't worry too much about it, you are doing fine! :)

I think anything that is worth doing - is worth DOING WELL. This includes spelling and grammar.
For those whose first language is English, I would consider no excuse except perhaps acute dyslexia or some other learning disability valid.
If English is a persons second language it is a totally different proposition.

I have found that posts that written better will receive more answers. Not that the English needs to be perfect to receive money for it, but the more well written, easy to understand discussions will get more people interested in it.
I admit, there have been a few that I didn't even finish reading because the english was so bad. I just couldn't understand what they were trying to say.
And kudos to you for trying to improve your english.

Hello, samrat, i do not think grammatical mistake is a problem especially when it is written english as long as we can understand each other,it will be ok.Sometimes people may type too quick and make some errors that they do not even know it.I am laughing at my replies sometimes after i had submitted them and I found out that I always have many mistakes.lol.But i think people can still understand me.Even if you do not understand, you can ask to make everything clear.
Good luck

Well there is a time and a place for good english grammar but as far as on here no one is perfect. There is alot of error and i do it myself but it is not to the point that you can figure out what is beign said. Oh by the way i am female 38 years of age and english is my native tongue and have yet to master it lol. Did you know that english is the hardest second language to learn in the world. Interesting eh and i can believe it too.

I agree that Mylot is a good place to brush up on English and grammar skills. I never have trouble understanding you, and most of the time, I forget that you are from India. I've got a few friends here from other countries that are very hard to understand. I know that if I were to try learning another language, I would do very badly. I've noticed some on Mylot that are from the US that have poor language skill. I'm not that great myself, as I sometimes get tired and mispell things, or make a grammatical error.

Im 22. I think that grammer in the United States varies greatly depending on whom you are speaking with. Things that can determine someones grammer are the area of the US that they are located in. I am origionally from TX where people use words like y'all. I have now relocated to PA where people use the workd yous guys. This is for lack of a better work regional dialect. Also age plays a part. Some younger people are more apt to use slang words that are commonplace in the American English language. Now adays no one really uses proper English except maybe the English pople Like people from England. The American English is different from coast to coast, and it seems that we like it this way :)

I think that good english is always important! I'm 17 years old, and I learned english by myself.. my mother language is portuguese.
I write a good portuguese, so I guess I've gotta write a good english, as good spanish and good italian.. those are the languages I know how to speak.
I think that a bunch of people make grammatical mistakes on MyLot.com, there're some posts I cannot understand! bad written as hell..
It gets hard sometimes but I can take it as long as the person try to improve its way of writting and accent.

I have learned to figure out most of what people mean on here. I try not to make mistakes in grammer but it happens to all of us. I was very good at English and grammer in school but I have been out of school since 1962 so I don't always do as good as I used too. Don't worry about it. Most people understand (or should). If not that is sad.

It's odd, because for me it can sometimes be difficult to use good grammar and have good spelling. But if someone else doesn't, I have a lot of difficulty reading their post and I usually just skip it. So that's why I try my hardest to make my posts readable. English is my first and basically my only language, but still, I have a hard time with reading so sometimes I can't read certain posts easily.

I am eight-teen and I think that good grammar and spelling is necessary. Though sometimes people do make typos just like spelling mistakes. It is wonderful that you are here trying to improve your language skills! Sometimes when you read peoples posts they are from different places and or use chat lingo like u, b/c, and so on and so forth other times they just don't know how to spell at all. I think it is very important to know how to spell.

Well, In one's own country, where native languages or mother tongue rules, knowing English well might not be a need. But otherwise, in any foreign land, or infact just outside your region the easiest means of communication is english, so why not know it well when you might be using it.
I am an Indian too, age 25 years, I too make lots of grammatical and linguistic mistakes here on mylot, but if given a chance I would like to improve the language, as much as to have a command over it. If well framed and wriiten without mistakes, it is obviously easy for anyone to understand correctly what you as the writer wants to communicate, so it does help other people.
When reading or writing in a language such as English, one must keep a few things inmind like:
1. Receipent : For whom is the communication meant : Reciever.
2. Content: Message should be simple, easy and flowing.
3. Clarity : content should be clear and crisp, to the point.
4. Use ample pauses, commas, full-stops. Smaller sentences are easier to understand.

Well in my opinion grammar and spelling is necessary to a minimum level -- say others are able to understand it well .. like I have seen many discussion in which I am not able to understand much .. so writing an easy, simple language with good grammar and spelling is quite necessary :)
