Lets forget about the politician and discuss why or why not the Iraq war can or can't be won. I think there are valid points on both sites, yet it would be great to evaluate them independently.

If we pull out now, there's a huge power vacuum left to be filled by what - terrorists, most likely. If we don't pull out now, we lose more lives of our sons and daughters. It's a lose/lose situation at this point, we have lost.

e_williams_07, I see your point and I think I would like to avoid th worst option such as losing more lives. Yet, what is the solution? Do we bring in Iran to achieve peace? Should we let them dominate ME?

There is a Chinese saying which translates to: To conquer a nation, you first conquer the hearts of its people. It's becoming clearer that not everyone in Iraq agrees with what USA is doing there. Peace can never be achieved if no one backs down, and it doesn't seem like the loyalist are backing down. With local support, they can fight on for a long, long time.

Scammerwear, I agree. But I am wondering though what is the alternative? How do we correct our mistakes? Is there anyway at all?

That's a tough question. Pulling out now will mean that Iraq will erupt into a hell hole. Stay on and there will be a huge drain on troops and money. It won't solve the problem, only slow down the country's degrading process. Personally I see two ways out of this. Screen, train and supply local intelligence units, using them to take out the loyalist. Or, well.. black ops.

Scremmerwear, do you think that all those actions can substitute the actuall local and reginoal dynamics that have in play for centuries? Do you think military will be able to achieve peace?

Sure it can be won, just maybe not by who you are thinking of.
