Socks and laundry

O.K. this is going to sound silly but... Haven't you ever wondered about just buying a new pack of socks every week, instead of matching up all the exisiting pairs? For only one person it would only cost about 40 bucks a month. I swear if I ever get enough money, I am going to have a new pack of socks for everyone, every week. It drives me so crazy that I end up with a basket full of orphan socks.

well, I don't buy new socks everytime some socks get lost. I just wear socks that don't match.no one isn't going to look at my socks.

That's true. I like summer time so I can wear sandels or crocs all of the time! I am a barefoot person in the house too so maybe I just hate socks altogether.

Boy, that doesn't sound at all necessary, or even desireable to me. There's 5 of us, and we all just have our own style of socks. DH wears XL crew socks, I have ankle socks with pink trim, SS wears plain ankle socks, SD wears mismatched socks because that's the style, she claims, and DS wears plain white baby socks. If one gets a hole in it, I'll toss it out, but then the orphan will just get matched up with another orphan eventually. When we start running low on socks because of holes, then we get a new pack. I bet I spend less than $30 a YEAR on socks for all of us.

Your right, it's not necessary, but I want to do it! I swear, if I ever win the lottery, that will be me, the lady with the cart full of socks!

Yeah, it drives me crazy too...What I've been thinking of doing for the next time I buy socks is to buy socks that are all the same, so that it doesn't matter if they match - 14 plain white socks or 13 plain white socks, they would all go together. Orphan socks make good toys for cats and dogs.

I have so many orphan socks now I could stuff an entire dog bed! I'm only being silly because the laundry is sitting behind me waiting. It's watching me.

If you want to be frugal, use a laundry bag from the dollar store. Put the socks in the bag and wash them that way. It should only cost $1 at the dollar store and use the money you'd save on paying other bills. That would be more frugal, especially if credit card interest is involved.

I buy everyone plain white socks. THen all we have to do is give the right size to each person. No matching involved. At 40.00 a month times 3 120.00 a month times 12 months 1440.00 a year I can match alot of socks. Or better yet let the kids match them up for free.

Your right, it's not very frugal. But I hate hate hate socks! Summer is so great because everyone likes sandals! We have been buying all white socks for a while now but it always seems like the band at the top is different or the length is off. I like the idea of the kids sorting them though. Any excuse for the kids to do more work is A-O.K. with me!

I have been buying the same kind of socks for each member of the family for years. Every one has a different style or brand. then I just sort according to style and brand. I don't know if there are any orphans this way. Every one has to fold and pair their own socks. Save me time and agervation.

That's a good idea. Recently we discovered the same type of sock but each size has a different color writing on the toe. So mine are purple and the kids can't steal 'em. ( I like plain white ankle sock and they fit my boys too.) My daughter is the only one that has fancy socks because she went through this Pippi Longstocking phase.

That's too funny. It's the most frustrating part of doing laundry, except for when the socks disappear all together. My husband does the laundry, and folds it, except for the socks, he leaves them in a pile for me to sort through, I usually end up with a pile on my dresser of all the socks with no mates. I should make a huge blanket with all my extra socks!

I have thought about it. I cant do it because we are poor. Not matching the socks would be great but the best part would be wearing new socks each day. New socks are always better and softer. Like a little hug for your feet. Now I am wishing for new socks. I may just go splurge, just a bit thouugh. On a side note. I always buy the same socks for my son and husband. White and plain, easy to match. Us girls get cute ones beacuse they all put me in charge of shopping and so I get perks for my self. My daughter gets cute socks because her feet are still growing so fast it is all the same, she grows out of them as fast as we lose them.

I feel the same way! Hugs for your feet. Oh well, unless we get very wealthy I guess it's sorting and washing for us.

It would be nice to do so but doesn't sound very frugal. I guess it depends on what you would prefer to spendf your extra money on. To me, if i had an extra $40 a month, I would not sepnd it on socks. LOL Why don't you just buy all the same kinds of socks; same color and design. That a way you just have to put them in pairs no need to match. This also saves money when one wears out.

My best friend is a frugal mom and gave me this money saving tip. Before socks go into the dryer, simply pin them to their mate. She swears that she's never lost a sock, yet. Chances are your orphan socks have magically attached themselves to other clothes in the dryer (static cling!). Try doing one big dryer load with nothing but socks. That way nothing will get lost.
