We had storms all night and still having them and one of my dogs is so afraid of thunder. She hides in the oddest places and I don't know how to comfort her. This morning she was under the coffee table because there was two of us in the living room.. I suppose she thought there was safty in numbers. There was a loud clap of thunder that made her jump up and hit her head on the table. I felt sorry for her and called her to me but the other dogs thought it would be fun to block her path. The poor thing was going in circles trying to get away from the other dogs and take cover before more lightening came. She wouldn't come to me after that she stayed under the table. I just feel so sorry for her because I don't have doggie ear plugs or anything. What do you do for your pet that is afraid of thunder?

yes.. i have a dog.. and he is so afraid of the thunder.. we always call him a coward.. how is he to protect our family if he can't even stand the thunder sound... usually , he will shiver and rush immediately towards the house.. and we will let him in because we think it's so cruel to put him out there.. as a human.. we do wish someone will care for us.. same for the animals.. sometimes.. my dog even rush to the kitchen.. and refuse to come out from there.. we just have to carry him out.. we don't know what's wrong with the dog.. but he's afraid of thunder.. your dog too have the same symptom? gosh.. what is happening to the dogs.. haha

My dog is freaked about most loud noises. And small too. Pretty much anything even thunder will set her off. Silly little toy dog. And then she forces me to hold her because I'm her mommy!

I have 13 yr. old dog that is afraid of thunder and fireworks. I have found that it I turn the TV or radio loud enough to cover the sound then he calms down.

Poor little thing. They are afraid of thunder because they dont know what it is. You can train them to not even notice it. It will take time and patience but will be worth it in the end. You need to get a recording of thunder, play it on the stereo really softly to begin with, have treats (or whatever you praise her with), give her the treats when she looks alert/scared - to distract her, once she has mastered that sound volume, slightly turn it up and then same process again, and so onso you could have it playing in the back ground and she wont even flinch. All dogs learn at different speeds, so I cannot guessimate how long this will take. Short frequent steps is the key. Good Luck with it.

My dogs do not like thunder either. They usually stay right at my side during storms.

My dog Toby was very afraid of thunder. Well he was afraid of most things that made noise. He was most frightened of popping bubble wrap.
When ever it stormed he would climb up on my lap. He weighed about 50 pounds but would cuddle like a puppy.
I think the only thing you could do is comfort him. Perhaps you could distract him with a treat or a game, toss his tennis ball?

My dog, who is part beagle and part terrier, is scared of almost everything that's loud. Since we got her last June, we really haven't had any bad thunderstorms, but coincidentally, we are in for some very rough weather today, so I guess I'll get to find out how she deals with thunder booms. I'm guessing she will be scared.

Yeah... our dog is afraid of the thunder... we usually take him into our lap and sometimes we put him in a place where he can find somebody to lean on when thunder rolls...

My dogs (i have 3) usually can detect a storm BEFORE it happens. They will bark out the window for about 5 minutes before the storm, Ill check outside and see if anybody is there, and if there isnt , i know that there will be a storm.

Many dogs become very distressed when they hear loud noises such as thunder. Fireworks, vacuum cleaner noise and other types of storms can also cause certain dogs to become extremely fearful. Common reactions include hiding, shaking and occasionally destructive behaviours like chewing through screen doors to escape to safe territory.
There are several things you can try to help calm your dog down depending on the severity of the problem. If you are anticipating a storm or fireworks a good extra long walk can help by tiring out your dog so that fatigue wins out over fear. Playing the radio or TV at a high volume can also mask the noise and relieve the fear. Providing your dog with a safe space of the DOG'S choosing usually where the noise level is lower, can often lessen the anxiety.
During an actual episode of anxiety, calming your dog down by over petting it and 'babying' IS NOT a good idea since this can actually reinforce the fearful behaviour. Punishing or crating an anxious dog is also bad thing to do since they cannot control this anxiety and may well destroy their beds or injure themselves.
A technique that has been very successful treating anxiety and phobias is called desensitization. The technique involves exposing the subject to a low level of what actually causes the anxiety while paired with something positive. Get a tape recorder and get your hands on sounds of a thunderstorm or fireworks or loud noises (perhaps the vacuum cleaner) that normally cause your dog to become afraid. Have your dog in a quiet room with you and start the tape off at a very low (barely audible) volume. Reassure your dog by petting it and saying "good dog" (or something similar) in a regular non babylike voice. Give your dog a couple of treats. Start off very slowly the first few times, perhaps just a couple of minutes of the low volume noise. GRADUALLY over a week or so make the volume louder until at the end of the exercise it is very loud. The goal is for the dog to associate these loud noises with calmness and treats thereby relieving the fearful behaviour. This technique works well for most dogs, but it must be done correctly or it can worsen your dog's reaction. Seek advice from your vet when in doubt.
I hope this helps.

I find it so funny to look at our pet dog hiding somewhere else because of thunder. After a while, I pity him because i can sense that he is nervous. So we'll just take him inside the house so he will feel protected and safe.
