Toys, What To Do With Toys Our Kids Have Outgrown

Parents love to buy toys for the children. We notice though, that after some time of having them, there are toys which get neglected while others are still cared for and loved through the passing years. I brought this up becuase, in my bed lie two teddy bears and a white stuff toy cat.
What do we usually do with those that are no longer of interest to them? For me, I give them away as gifts to some children who may want them. Those toys will become garbage anyway, if it will be just left in a corner for so long. There are others though which I keep when I feel some kind of attachment to them. Do you feel that this is a reasonable thing to do? Please share your thoughts in here.

Hello,trinidadvelasco,I do not have children.
I think most of the time it is the childrent that ask their parents to buy toys to them and the parents will of course buy them some because it is not good to reject their children. The toys may have 'short life' they may be discarded after a short time and the children may ask their parents to get something new for them, that is why there are so many 'left over' in the room of the kids which some of the toys will not be touched anymore after they get the new ones. May be you can also give the old toys to other children in your family, may be the cousins of the kids so that they do not have to buy any new toys.

i know that passing those toys to the neighbors and relatives are also being done by most of us around here. it is good to see their faces light up when they receive some toys.

Yes it is a good idea to kep the sentimental ones, and give the other ones to the children in need. My mum kept some of my brother and sisters toys aside for when we have kids so that they have toys to play with while we visit, although some of the toys my son is scared off but others he loves. Or else with the other toys of yours give them away on freecycle. My mum gets heaps of stuff on there. It does not cost anything. If you need any information about it ask my mum, her name on here is shoelover.

thank you for this tip katrina. it is good to know that we can have some toys for free and that, we can also bring our old toys there.

It depends, I usually give them away to good will, or salvation army, where they will go to kids who really would appreciate them. I also sometimes give them to my friends children, you are younger and would enjoy them as well. I think it is much better to find a home for them, rather then throwing them out. I have known some people who would throw things out before allowing someone else to enjoy it. I don't get that one.

i agree with you that it is better that we give our old toys to new owners who will love them, too.

When I was in high school, we did a toy drive to collect the students unwanted toys and stuffed animals that were in good condition. Our class dressed up as elves, toys, and dolls then delivered the wrapped toys to the kids at a children's hospital. As teenagers, it made us feel good to pass along the stuffed animals & toys we no longer played with, and even better knowing we had brightened a sick childs day. We also raised a few hundred dollars to buy coloring books & crayons to make sure we had enough to give every child a gift. :)

I do still keep my toys, because they have meanings for me. I only have few toys when i was a child and i have this building blocks which until now i keep. Because its the only toy that i have when i was a child and i have lots of memories with it. So i will just keep it and maybe my kids will play it one day.

buildings blocks do not grow old. keep them well secure in a cellophane bag then in a box, take a peep once in a week to make sure it is all okey. that will be just fine until your kids come.

I always pass the toys along usually to our church nursery. And if they don't need them, then I take them to my school's Pre-K program. If they don't need them I take them to the salvation army. I take my kids with them so they can start understanding that they need to give back to others.

really, sodapop? there are some toys that the church nursery will not take? this is the first time that i have heard of this. anyway, i am very sure that there will always be takers among the kids in the neighborhood. this is how we unload our toys at most times.

yes, i understand it now. those toys that they take are for small children and it will be dangerous if the kids swallow them or place the small parts in their ears. these small children have a tendency to do all these odd things which we couldn't be thinking of.

Oh yes, the church won't take any "Army" toys, any toys with small parts, only washable markers, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I know they wouldnt take a lot of Barbie items because they were to small like shoes, ect. I guess it makes since if you think about it.

When my kids gets done with there toys, they get passed down. My oldest child's toys goes to her sister. Then from my youngest, they go to my nieces. In a couple of weeks, I will be giving my niece a bunch of old toys. Now I do have the habit of keeping a lot of there toys, mostly stuffed animals that means something to me. I still have my teddy bear when I was a kid. I am also thinking of calling the local fire department to see if they have a box where they collect stuffed animals to hand out to small children when sad to say something happens to there home. Where I used to live, they would ask for stuff animals to hand out, so the child will have something to hold on to. That's what I do and plan on doing with my kids non used toys.

Every child I think loves to have at least one special toy. My two kids have enough stuffed animals that they could give one to at least 100-200 kids. Still there are a lot of them that means a lot to me. For example ones that was given to them by loved ones that's not here no more. They have large and small. The larger ones I do like to keep since it's hard to get rid of them, lol. The smaller ones that they could care less about and I'm willing to let go. I want to box up and give to children that don't have them. More people should do this and it's a good feeling to give to kids that don't have anything. I just wish I could afford to do it for every child in the world.

we must feel for those children who needs something to hold on to. if those toys can mean that much to them, it is right to give them those that we have, i agree with you on this very much, chertsy.

I usually give their toys to other children when they have out grown them.
Also, I work in a nursery and years ago I took in my sons garage and my daughters dolls house. They are still there today and the kids love them. Its often brings back memories of when they were young and use to play with them.
I still have a few of their special toys as I could not part with them and I also have a couple of teddies Dum Dum and Bunny, from when I was a baby and a doll I named Maureen Susan, for some strange reason. I could never get rid of these, they are my past and hold special memories for me.

.. hi, you can keep the favorite toys and give the other toys to orphan children, if you are bizniz minded, you can sell the used toys in good condition to second hand shops. it is well appreciated also if you give it to their cousins or friends who like the toys.

that's the good thing that you did, giving out toys those are not being played anymore by out kids... or give them to orphanage.. those kids who dont have toys will make them happy... let your kid give it to the orphanage.. im sure not just the orphans who will be delighted about it but both you and your kids as well.. its nice feeling to let some kids happy, isnt it? :) those toys that are still attached to you can still be kept as long as you think you still can use it..anyway, you still can buy toys again. right?

as i get older, i find some things which may still may useful for others while, they are no longer of use to my children. to make others happy through these things, it is only right that i give them away.

actually, most of us would love to share the good things that we have had which we can no longer use. we become aware of the needs of others once some organizations make their appeal or when calamities strike. when this happens we even give away some of those things which we are still using but can let go of.

When my hubby and I no longer want things weither it be clothes, toys, or anything really we either give it to the Salvation Army or to our friends if they want it. I would rather someone else get use out of it then just throw it away.

We will try to sort through the childrens toys every so often. Some we will give to the other children in the family that want them. The rest of the toys we donate to a local church or thrift store. If there is a special toy that has a meaning behind it we will put it up in a plastic ziploc bag with a letter explaining what makes that toy so special.

there are some who are just like you. they keep the toys in ziplock bags then place them in a glass shelf. when the kids have grown up, their faces will light up when they see the favorites ones which they used to be playing with.

Giving them to a charity such as the local Ronald McDonald House or a local battered womans shelter would be a good thing. If the toys are unopened it can be a good feeling for the kids to give these unused toys to the Toys for Tots program.

I agree with you. I have given them to other children that wanted them, or to the goodwill to give out. As long as the toys are in good condition, another child may enjoy it more than throwing it into the garbage. Bless you dear.

We go through our kids toys periodically and get rid of some that they either don't play with anymore or that are broken and dangerous with sharp edges and stuff. The broken ones we throw in the trash and the toys that are still good go to either a thrift store, a needy family, a freecycle program but they go out of our house. It sounds like you are doing the same thing so I have to say that we are both doing the best thing and helping where we can!

I agree with your reasoning to get rid of items you are not using anymore. Give it to somebody who needs it most. One more thing it's like another thrash in your home. For those items with sentimental value took a picture and shipped it out. When you die, they'll just throw it anyway so why keep it. Let other used it and they'll have a fond memory with it. These is what we do with our old things.

yes, clear the house. as for the ones with sentimental value, take pictures and store them in the computer. no trash there.

Our church has a little store we can give used things like toys and household items and clothes to. They resell them cheap and the gain is for charity.
I just took a bag full of toys over there so some other kid is happy and so charity has money.

the church will be able to raise sufficient funds for its activities. that is a good way to get the stuffs out of the house.
