European Scientists find an Earth-like Planet.

According to Reuters, European Scientists have found an Earth-like planet revolving a red dwarf star called Gliese 581, in the constellation Libra. It's radius is approximately 1.5 of our planet's. It has balmy temperatures that could support water and, as they say, probably life. Well, even though they've found such planet I think it would be impossible for us to inhabit it, since it's 20 lightyears away. How about you? If ever we could sent a space probe there do you think we'll find some form of life there?

It's possible that life exists there, although it would be somewhat difficult for us to acclimate with the stronger gravitational force. At this point, I don't think it would be worth it to send any sort of probe because it would take so long to get there. Might as well wait for a technology that could get it there quicker.

I would have to agree, sending a probe would be a waste of time and effort, since it's way too far and it would take infinite amount of time just to get there and not to mention getting a response from that probe would take too long. It would better to search a closer planet and/or develop new technologies that would get us there. Right?

I would say that our money is better spent on new technologies of exploration. Even if a planet was discovered around the closest stars, it would still take way too long for anything to get there (look at how long it is taking us to get to Pluto and that is in our own Solar System!). New technologies need to be developed before we can ever hope to get out of the Solar System.

I've read about it, saw the sims on it, and figure it's the first good prospect for a new home. Generational ships are not beyond out technology right now. I wouldn't be surprised if you star seeing the scifi geeks banding together in communes devoted to the task of creating, deisigning, and launching a generational ship in the near future. 'Course this will not happen until the Moon Station is built, due to the need to test planetary habitation equipment, but once we do that, I expect to see cults of geeks arising from the woodwork demanding a generational ship by 2100. It's going to be very risky, but it's a possibility... And oh, yes. We should send a probe right away. Still, there's no guarantee it'd ever make it across "the void". There's too much unpredictability in what dark matter is looming between us and that planet.

Well generational ships are beyond our technology right now. And there isn't any dark matter between us and the planet because there would be gravitational distortions visible if there was.
