Pride and prejudice has consistently regarded as Jane Austen's most popular novel. In my opinion, Chapter 1 of Pride and Prejudice is classical and famous. Many researchers study on this chapter. I know there are several editions of chinese translation of this chapter, especially the first setence, also the first paragraph of this chapter:"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." When I read this sentence for the first time, I feel it's funny. However, after I read it for two more times and think about it, I feel it's reasonable. Hehe! Very interesting! In this first chapter, characters of Mr Bennet and Mrs Bennet are represented vividly by the simple words! I began to pay much attention on this novel when I was in the college on the literature class. The teacher is very kind and teach us carefully. He studied and taught in Canada for a long time. At that time, we and the teacher learned this novel sentence by sentence, and the teacher explain every colorful and witty word and even punctuation. I miss our teacher and that wonderful time!

I don't think a lot of peopel realize how funny Jane Austen really was. They think that old books are dull books. Austen was so perceptive about her time. You were fortunate to have such a wonderful teacher!

Thank you for your response, and thank you much for you providing more information about Austen! And what's your job? Maybe if it's possible, you can exchange your idea with my teacher. However, It's pity that I can't get touch with my teacher now! Pity! Good luck to you, maribea!
