I've always found it helps to have 2 dogs to keep each other company. Try encouraging him to be outdoors alone for short periods of time that get a little longer each evening, for example, night one-he stays out for 1 hour, night two-two hours, etc. You must stay up and if he barks, tell him, "No!." If he's quiet, when you bring him in, give him a dog treat and tell him, "Good, dog! Good, boy!" and pet him. If he can't go one hour without barking, start with 5 minutes and work up from there. Gradually, he will be able to stay out longer, until he can make it through the night. He must have shelter (a dog house) and water. Make sure he can't roam free or he could be hit by a car or get lost. You must have a fence as it is inhumane to keep him tied up. If you live where it snows, I don't recommend leaving him out all night; he's not a dog built for cold. St. Bernards and Huskies do well, even in snow, if they have shelter, but boxers don't have the fur for it. My personal opinion is that dogs do better if they are inside at night and can be with you.
