Square foot gardening

Any of you use the "square foot gardening" approach (where you use a very small plot to grow in abundance)? I have two 4x5 plots and use them with great success each year. In those plots I grow tomatoes, peppers, green beans, squash, snow peas, lettuce (several kinds), carrots, herbs, and this year we're trying strawberries. I have found the method to be so manageable. I know it's what keeps me gardening. I'm not overwhelmed by the size of my garden, I can easily reach things, and the kids can even help.

I have heard a bit about it. Can you really get more yeild out of smaller spaces? I would definately love to learn more about it. Where would I go to get enough information to try it out for myself? Does it include herbs too? My kids love to help me with my gardening. It sounds great.

Although I can't remember the author off hand, if you want a resource, get the book "Square Foot Gardening." It contains more detail than I'd ever use, but I did use the book to get started on my garden and it was really helpful. As to more yeild, I think it does. You are trying to get a big crop, but in a smaller space. If you succeed, then I'd say it's a larger yeild! And yes, you can use it with herbs. I always grow one or two herbs a year that I dry and use all year. This year I'm growing basil and parsley.
