Electric trains, only toys?

Some people say about electric trains that they are toys for children, but I think there is more to say about them. Of course, it's not a big deal to put a cercle of railroad tracks on the carpet and watch the train go round and round again. But, with some imagination and some money :( it can become a great hobby not only for cildren, but also for grown persons. The child can have an occupation building houses, roads, trees and all sort of things to create his small world and this way he concentrates on a positive aspect. What is your opinion?
