My dog just lost his teeth. The vet said when he did he would be old enough to snip snip. Now that he has lost his teeth I dont want to take him. I understand that doing this prevents an overpopulation of pets and so on....but it feels so wrong. My poor puppy. I dont want to, but I know I need to. Any advice?

He'll be fine. Males recover very quickly from neutering and he will have 100% less chance of getting testicular cancer, and a far less chance of getting prostate cancer, which I assure you will be more painful than getting neutered.

Maybe you think this will be painful or traumatic in some way? That your pup will somehow resent his loss? I can promise you from having had MANY dogs and cats spayed and neutered that this is not the case!! It is not painful or traumatic and the animal really isn't conscious of what's happened. All they know is it's a trip to the vet (which, admittedly most are a bit nervous about but it's what's best for them) where they fall asleep then wake up feeling unusually groggy and perhaps a bit stiff and sore. Vets are usually happy to prescribe you something to give them for pain just in case but I've never had to actually use it for mine. At the worst it took maybe 3-4 days or so for them to be up, around, and just as good as ever and most didn't even take that long!
I think you should definitely go through with it! Just think of it as one less thing in your beloved pup that could get cancer as he ages!! It's so worth it!

Different vets have different methods but basically they make a small incision (or sometimes two) in the scrotum then take the testes out. It's actually MUCH safer and easier on male dogs than females! It's very simple surgery for the males, a bit more major for the females. You just keep the incisions (which you probably will only see a very small line, it's not a big, gaping, icky thing at all!) clean and dry and they heal up very quickly. The scrotum will shrink up over a bit of time so that there's not skin hanging down there.
