all small children put things into their mouths they shouldnt. you have to watch them very closely. I tried to eat a cricket when I was little. You could also have him checked for a vitamin defeciency. Some people eat dirt because of it. Maybe start giving him vitamins and see if that helps.

it is normal for small kids to do this. they explore this way. just like when they throw it to see if it bounces or breaks. taste is a good way to explore things. that and how it feels. you just have to keep close eyes on them at all times when they do things like this. my kids i didnt have a big problem with it when they were small but my neighbors kid sticks everything to her mouth. she was caught eating out of the litter box the other day. they dont keep a close eye on her. how that kid is still living is beyond me but that is a differnt matter. al you can really do is when they pick things up and start to the mouth say no no and just let them hold it. help them use there hands to feel of it. like petting motion, turning it, rubbing it on the other arm etc. they will get the picture after awhile.

Like all discussions above, it is absolutely normal for a small child to put things in his mouth. This is because it is a way of exploring objects, they are still learning about the world around them and they tend to be very curious about everything, they have to touch it and taste it. I've heard that eating mud even makes the immune system stronger, but of course too much would not be good. My daughter who is nearly three used to eat her crayons and put coins and stones in her mouth, she has also eaten mud. I look after children during Church service and we always have to keep an eye on the little ones who like putting things in their mouths. So don't worry about it, it's a fase that will pass, but you should always keep an eye on the child and try to teach him that he shouldn't do that, you could tell him it will hurt his mouth, or his tummy... or like I tell my daughter to avoid her eating too many sweets is that her teeth will fall out, might sound traumatizing, but I don't think she's traumatized about it, if he doesn't understand what you're saying, he will eventually, children are very smart! All the best to you and your family.

I guess you just have to have someone who'll be there 24/7 with the kid. I assume he's a toddler and so he's usually very playful and would put anything to his mouth. Better there'll be an accident-free, sharp-free, clean and comfortable environment for the kid or you just have to watch out for his every move. =)

If the child is real young than it is completely normal and I would not be concerned with it. But if he is older than I would definitly take him to the doctor. Then of course my mom says she used to eat mud pies when she was younger and they never hurt her. It is actually funny, we have a joke now in our house about it. Whenever the subject is brought up my husband says "She ate mud pies and pooped out sandcastles".

I think it would be a good idea to keep an eye at him all the time,or hire a good babysitter to take care of the kid all the time as possible....or on the other hand, you can argue with him a little,if the kid has the proper age for a discussion:).aaaa, you didn't say how old he is....
