Researchers have shown that,in the male canary, vocalism develops in four distinct phases; 1.Food begging;Consisting of shrill and high-pitched calls, present for about four weeks after birth. 2.Sub-song;When the first attempts to sing are evidenced. The sounds are of low volume. 3.Plastic song;Consisting of variable qualities, but with improved structure and some indication of the stereotyped quality to follow. 4.Stable song;Which persists during the mating season, but which deteriorates the plastic song until the next mating season. There is also evidence of year-round rhythm. There is a correlation between the bird's type of song and his testosterone blood levels.

Thanks for sharing this informations. There's a restaurant in my neighbourhood that keeps a lot of canaries in their entrance gate for people to see. And my daughter love them as they have in many different colours. So next time, I'll be more attentions to their song...

my family has always had canaries. I am the first who doesn't because I have cats inside. Right now I have four cats. But all the while I was growing up there were always canaries and budgies at home.
