Talking about death

Just last night, I was scared that I might be ask to explain something that I am not ready to and scare my son with my answer if I am going to be honest. My four year-old son is asking about ages. How old I am, my husband, my mother. He asked if my mother is in her twenties and I said that no, she's older than twenty. That she's already near fifty. And he asked me if she's going to die soon. I was shocked to hear that but thankfully he asked about nothing else when I said no. Does your kids know about death already? How did you explain it to them or what will you do if they ask about it. I wouldn't want to scare my son. What would you do if the situation comes when you're asked about death?
