US Government Conspiracies?

We all have heard Conspiracy Theories about how the US Govt has been involved in scandals, cover ups, deaths, "accidents", corruption, and even mind control.
We know the US Government has been unbridled for years upon years and appears more interested in being "self-serving" rather than working "for the people" as was intended.
I don't buy into a lot of the extravagant stories of conspiracies when they circle round, but I do believe that as citizens we are being used as pawns and directed to follow our leaders' agendas. I believe we are "fed" only what has been pre-screened and approved for our consumption in the media - to keep us in check. I think that if we knew some of the magnitude of what our top leaders have sealed away from us we would be scrambling in fear and disbelief.
It becomes easy to look at bits and pieces of information we're allowed to know and concoct stories of conspiracy aimed against us and our freedoms from our own government, or to twist things into being more than merely coincidental. From Roswell to Marilyn Monroe, from skewed elections to the Troopergate Scandal....why do we only sit back and "discuss" the possibility that we are being herded into totalitarian rule on a level that reminds me of an episode of "Dallas" on a much grander scale?
If there are legitimate concerns, then why don't people work together and demand facts and truth? Why do we allow our leaders to do as they please unchecked, or to make up the rules (or new laws) as they go along in order to protect themselves for their illegal actions? Do people fear that if they speak up they will suddenly find themselves dead in a fatal car crash?
How CAN we be sure our Government is working for the people and not the other way around? Isn't there any way to control those who are meddling with the lives of those they represent? They have become "untouchable" and "unaccountable" for their actions...whether conspiracy-laden or not.
I am interested to know your thoughts on these topics.

Oh yes, there is no doubt that the government treats it's people like mushrooms. Feeds them BS and keeps them in the dark. And some of it, I believe is legit. There are things that if it were to get out would jepordize national security. And in those cases, we must trust that the people we elect are making the right choices.
Unfortunatly, history has shown that we really don't know what the government is hiding until after the fact. Which is why all these conspiracies. An event, let's take 9/11, happens and it gets out the government has information that could possibly have prevented these attacks. Did we know that before hand? Nope, not a clue. But we found out afterwards. And only because it happened. If 9/11 didn't happen, we never would have known. It's like they just stay one step ahead of the american public.
And the louder we scream for answers, the more BS they will feed us. It's a losing battle as far as I am concerned. They give us just enough to let us think we have enough.
The way our government is stuctured right now, I don't feel they are working for ALL the people. But the big businesses and the elite. With an occasional shout out to the poor and homeless. And as long as the big business and the elite are controlling the gorvernment, I just don't think there is really anything the rest of us can do.
Sad, ain't it?

Very well said! I like the mushroom analogy too, lol.
Yes, very sad indeed.
Last night I was reading about the Virginia Tech massacre and how things are not adding up. I have no clue what, if anything out of the ordinary massacre (ha, not even funny how we are conditioned to accept this as part of everyday life in America and discard it as "normal"), is behind this event but people have pointed out some very interesting facts...
such as it would be near impossible to inflict so many fatal wounds without prior expertise in handgun use and reloading experience, something about Cho shooting himself in the "back" of the head and making his face "unrecognizable", his sister's ties to US Intelligence and companies tied with the Govt regarding intelligence (why would media even mention that?), the return address on the package he sent being 88 revol drive (people say 8 is for the letter H, HH=??? and revol spelled backward is lover), the timing, the question of mind control linked with prior efforts of US Intelligence....much of what I read sounds very farfetched, but it does make a person of normal brain function sit back and go, "hmmmmm??"
With a government that has been proven so corrupt, so many times in the past, it does tend to add feul to the skepticism of the public.

Yes I agree with you. Sometimes a rose is, in fact, just a rose.
I think the history of corruption in our (any) government/leadership has contributed greatly to the way people have become "paranoid?" (not quite the right word I was looking for).
If we look hard enough, we could find something "sketchy" about the most mundane thing.
