Insulin is an enzyme; a kind of substance that is secreted by the pancreas to lower the sugar in the blood. Blood sugar is medically termed as glucose. When there is a rise in the blood sugar level it trigger the pancreas to stop them from accumulating too much so it sends down insulin. What insulin does is like opening the door wide to let all the sugar in the blood enters the tissues of our body like the muscles, brain and the different organs of our body to used as energy. Diabetes is a disease that is cause not by the sugar perse but by the inadequacy of the enzyme called insulin to help open the door wide for this sugars to used as energy. When there is no enough insulin blood sugar is still use by our body as energy but not enough of this enters the tissues and organs due to low insulin. It is somewhat like 10-20 people trying to enter in the window all at once because the door is shut and their is no key to open it wide.

Blood sugar accumulates in blood too much if there is not enough insulin to push it to the tissue. Too much blood sugar is called hyperglycemia meaning "high sugar in the blood" with this condition our blood becomes acidic due to high sugar content that's why people with high blood sugar has a fruity breath. Insulin serves as key that opens the tissues' door flushing insulin inside to be used as energy because our main source of energy especially the brain is sugar. On the other hand too much insulin production also put us at risk of lowering too much the sugar in our blood to a very low level that is why a diabetic person needs to take food first before taking insulin tablet or injection so as not to deplete too much the sugar in our blood it is called hypoglycemia meaning "low blood sugar".

Hi aniez! No. insulin is yes a hormone secreted by the pancreas that helps lower the blood sugar level of the blood. It works like a transport system of blood sugar down to the tissues of our body in order for the sugar to be used as energy without insulin indeed you'll accumulate too much sugar in your blood that stayed there because without insulin sugar can not enter the tissues of our body so it will accumulate in the blood and that is the cause of diabetes so you're right you have to inject insulin to lower the sugar in your blood it will be flushed entirely to the tissues.
