My puppy really likes chocolate. It ate a whole pack of my hersheys. Is it okay for my pup to be eating chocolates?

I have always heard that we are not supposed to give a dog chocolate because it will give them worms for one and it may also kill them. My dog loves M&M's. I buy them and I give him at least one per day. I have done that for a few years now and it hasn't made him sick nor has it killed him. I think if you feed them too much though it will cause them to get worms and possibly die. I do not think chocolate alone kills dogs though. There is no proof of such a thing. I would just be careful not to give him too much and make sure he takes worm pills.

you should stop that now. chocolate doesn't give worms, it poisons dogs. the poisonous effects are cumulative, meaning that the toxins in chocolate don't leave the dogs system. they build up over time. even a small amount of chocolate, given regularly, will eventually build up enough to harm or even kill your dog.

Hi Galena. I have had my dog for 9 years and he loves M&M's. He goes to the vet every year for his checkups but he is in great health. I don't give him an M&M every single day but every now and then, he gets only one of them. All sweets, including chocolate, will give a dog worms if you feed it to them. I have my dog on preventative medicine that he takes monthly to reduce any risks. My dog is in perfect health and even the vet says he is younger than his actual age in dog years. Sugar will give your dog worms and if given in access, I do know it will kill them. He only gets 2-3 M&M's per month so that isn't too bad for him. I have done that over 9 years and he is in very good health. I'm sure there are some risks and some people may claim that chocolate is bad for dogs, but I would have to disagree because my dog is living proof that it isn't true.

it's not a claim. it's the truth. there is a chemical in chocolate that is toxic to dogs and never leaves the system. so it builds up. and I can't see any physical way in which sweets will give a dog worms, unless sweets contain egg worms or larvae, in which case I don't think we'd be so keen to eat them. there's probably not enough chocolate in M&Ms to be too much to worry about, but it does still contain some chocolate, and that chocolate IS still toxic to a dog. and even in such a small amount, it's still a long term buildup of the toxin, and not a chance I would take with my dogs.

you should NEVER feed your dog chocolate. it is very poisonous to them. even if you just give them a small amount at a time, the poison doesn't leave the body, it stays there and if you give a small amount at a time, then you are just building up to the poisonous level slowly. eventually it will reach a level that can kill your dog.
