why do some people fear dogs?

nero, my dog, scary? - here is the most docile dog i have ever met, he is so much fun i cant imagine anyone being scared, yet friends of mine find him a threat, why? how?

I thimk some people fear dogs because they are afraid they will bite them. Cats can bite too so I don't really undertand it either other than some dogs are alot bigger than cats are. I have a dog also, but I fear some species of dogs because some of them are very ferocious. Soem breeds of dogs are just born to not be friendly to humans. I don't know why, but alot of them end up befriending humans and they will bite them.

i know, some breeds seem so much more agressive than others. I love labradors because they can be trusted around children. I also think dogs are generally ok, its how people treat them that makes the difference

Yes. soem of the breeds are more agressive than other breeds. I like lbradors also. I have a Pomeranian that I have had for 9 years now. Most dogs are okay and alot of them turn out badly because of how their owners treat them. I do agree with that. Some dogs also turn badly though even if their owner is good to them. I had a dog like that one time. I had a chow and it turned on me and everyone around him. He bit my sister's hand when she went to give him food in his bowl. I'm not sure what got into him.

to me that sounds like displacement jealousy. Was your dog used to having your sister feed it? such changes can provoke an atack blessed be

yes your dog looks lovely in the picture and i'm sure he is a good dog, I've had a fear of dogs since i dont know when, I'll cross the road rather than have to pass one in the street, I'm ok with dogs that i have known since pups. Its a terrible feeling my skin crawls and I can feel the hair stand up on the back of my neck, I have been known to cry at times when forced to be near a dog i wasnt comfortable with my boss did this when he brought his dog into work to help me, it was a german shepherd and although it was on a lead and well under his control i just burst into tears when i open the door and he was sat in his office with it next to him.

Dogs sometimes can be a bit overbearing, and wanting the attention that cats don't want so some people might be scared of them, my son was once bit by a dog when he was 3 years old, even though he 25 he is still scared of most large dogs and avoids them.

I am scared of dogs simply because I have been beaten by my grandparents' dog when I was 4. It left me a scar on the leg and a scare ... of dogs I am usually more scared by big dogs. Even when people tell me their dog is nice I am not going to pet him, put I won't run away either ... unless he starts barking or showing his teeth

Some people are scared of dogs because they may have been attacked as a child, or even as an adult. And they just can't get over the terror of that day. But for me, I think IF i was ever attacked by a dog, i would not be scared of all dogs for the rest of my life. I love dogs, I'm a huge dog person and I wouldn't let one attack keep me from having a dog or being around them.

I 100% agree with you. Dogs are not born bad. People abuse or neglect them, which makes them stop trusting people. I love dogs, and I feel comfortable around dogs because I trust them. I might be too trustworthy of all animals, but thats just the way I am. I might pay for it one day, but I hope not lol. I trust animals more than I trust people.

I can see why some people might be afraid of really large dogs..the fear that they might bite...but it's been my experience that sometimes the biggest dogs are the most cuddly and are real sweeties--and have a gentle nature about them...They associate size I guess with bad tempers, but forget, cats can be pretty good at biting...and you're dog Nero looks like a real sweetie and gentle soul

oh believe me, when you consider when we got him he had been beaten and starved, to see him now you just cant imagine the progress he has made. He lets the kids climb all over him aqnd just wonders off when he has had enough of it. Also, although he has abandonment issues still, we are getting there with him. blessed be

I've heard this quite often how pets who were abandoned or beaten/abused are often the gentlest--but it does take awhile for them to trust--Nero is very lucky that you rescued him then

People fear dogs because they are afraid of them. Or they have been bite or threathen by a dog in the past. Heck even all the hype of attack and killer dogs in the news is enough to scare people. I am not afraid of small dogs. As they may hurt when they bite. But I can kick them to get them off me or away from me. But I am afraid of large dogs...As a child and growing up in th ecountry. I use to live down a road. It was like a one way street but stoned. The neighbors dog got loose and chase me and my siblings down the street. It caught me,attacked me and held me down. Til the dogs owner answerede there door where my siblings were pounding. he seen what was happening and pulled the dog off me. Sorry but ever since then. Any dog large enough to hold me dog scares the crap out of me. I don't care how well mannered the dog is with the family. Dogs always act different to strangers.

My brother in law who is 36 is afraid of large dogs. This is because as a small child, he was attacked by a large police dog. My youngest daughter is also afraid of large dogs because of the same kind of situation. Also, with many news stories about stray rots and the like that have attacked small children, some of the larger dogs are beginning to have a bad rap.

rebel - THE DOG i GAVE TO MY MOM FOR HER BIRTHDAY ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. hE'S PART DALMATION PART LAB BUT I CAN SEE HOW HE CAN BE PRETTY SCARY TO SOME PEOPLE. hE'S VERY PROTECTIVE OF US AND PROBABLY WOULD BITE SOMEONE PTO PROTECT US.
Your dog looks very lovable. It could be the size of him alone that intimidates people.

I used to have a pet dog and cat when I was a little girl. The name of the dog is Essie. She was cute when she was a little dog but when she grew up she became wilder. I got mad at her when she ruined my favorite red dress and my shoes. She even threw some of my barbie dolls outside the window. Since then, I wanted to get rid of her. I don't know what my dad did to the dog and she suddenly disappeared. We lived in a condo unit a year after and pets are not allowed. Up to this day, I never had a pet again

i think people who are afraid of dogs are those who had bad experience with them. Maybe they have been bitten by a dog. There are also people who are afraid just because the dogs bark loud at them.

As we can see from the number of responses we have had from the discussion, fear is complex in its genesis but uniform in its expression blessed be

I know some friends really scared of dogs and cats. Maybe they just never keep a pet of themselves, they don't know how to get along or stay with a pet. My sister is an example, she scared of any animals, even chicken, and she is scared of going to zoo since a kid. Haha, she is very special.

Well, when I was a young whippersnapper, I was bitten by a small dog 4 times. Ever since then, I've been a little leary around all dogs. Usually, though, once an owner has introduced me to their dog, I'm fine - I just need to know that the dog is ok with me. I can see from the fine expression on your dog's face that he is just a cuddle-bum. I bet we'd get along just fine.

Some people are afraid of dogs because of the fear of being bitten by it.actually we always fear of dogs in that sense from childhood that biting of dogs is really dangerous & we have to take lots of injections which will cause lots of pain. Also the barking of dog is someehat loud which often scare people.

People consult me with all sorts of fears and dogs is quite common. They learn this from their parents or stroking the wrong dog at the wrong time when they are little. Hard to understand, but you got to experience it I guess. I've always had a dog and a cat, but the pain of them leaving you when they die is too much, so we don't have either now. But I have a lot of "dog-friends" I often see about the neighbourhood and we often have a good old chat.. Saves a lot on vet bills I can tell you.. ;-)

maybe it is a mistake, I think when your friends fimilar with your dog, it will be no problem anymore, you know ,dog is the best friends of human being, ,it is abvously, they always help keeping the door for us, it is its advantage. they are sure bark when they see a stranger, and alter their host .

There are some dogs with serious mental problems, they attack you from behind, they ran after you if you ride the bike. I don't dislike dogs, in general, but those bad ones...I can't say that I like them.
