What is the point of the Lost men's sperm count increasing if their wives they get pregnant die before the third trimester? Is it because the Smoke Monster is a demon who just wants men to cave into their lascivious desires? Is it because only twins and triplets should be born on the ISLAND? I see no point if the result leaves to sadness, not only of the woman but of the unborn baby.

My guess is that it has something to do with the super healing that seems to happen there. I don't know about the pregnant women or babies though - that seems like an oxymoron. I doubt if the smoke monster is a major player though - I think it's more of a "nightmare" factor for the losties.

I thought that was a weird thing too. I alomst wondered it it was a way to create/ensure the population of The Others on the island...but while things went positively for the men (they are more virile and therefore more likely to get women pregnant) something has gone wrong withthe women (pregnancy is deadly) and this is why Ben brought Juliette to the island and won't let her leave until she figures out what is wrong. If they can't have any more children then the society will die out in a generation or two.
This is probably why The Others steal all the children they see. So that can incorporate them into their society to keep it going. I bet this is also why Ben wants to keep his daughter away from her boyfriend. Maybe he is worried that she will get pregnant.

I think that is right. I suppose one has to make horrible choices. It does not sound right for the men to be more productive unless the Island demon=-ruler was interested in men having harems and having fun at the women's expense, and being jerks. I suspect that Juliette will find the cure and that Sun and the other women can give birth. It might even lead to Lost being shown every year or so as a mini series. That worked with Gilligan's Island (bad comparison) and other shows that were canceled.

It seems to me that the island's super-healing/increased metabolic abilities also make it so that the women's bodies treat the babies as if they're infections and work to kill the infections in the bodies. I don't think the smoke monster is a demon. It's most likely man-made as some sort of security feature.

I have another theory that the Island is surrounded by a force field and that the original inhabitants Others are aliens and their females give birth before the third trimester, but since they had to mate with human women, their babies probably kill their mothers before they are ready for birth. However since ABC has had bad luck on the alien invading earth and we are all doomed or there is a super human race that will make Hitler seem like a fairy godmother, we will not know who the Others really are or who the smoke monster is, until near the end of the show.
