I just read that Richard Gere could get arrested for kissing a woman celebrity at an AIDS show. Apparently, public displays of affection, particularly by an American is against the law and some of the India people feel that he was being disrespectful. Gere is a Buddhist and visits India frequently to meet the Dahli Lama who lives in near-exile. And India officials say that Gere could be arrested if he comes back to the country although they cannot arrest him while out of the country. Apparently there were all sorts of protests going on. THis reminds me of how America was so up in arms at Janet Jackson's bosom display at the SuperBowl.

Apparently he did a little more than just kissing.Normally, the court never jumps in to make it's presence felt in such cases, but some self proclaimed moral police turned the attention of the courts towards this and created a hoopla about a non-issue.If I see it right, neither of them will be punished for something like this.If anything,a nominal fine might be imposed and the issue will be forgotten. It's truly not worth the attention it's getting, but as they say any kind of publicity is good publicity for stars.

actually all he did was kiss the woman but it was publicly. And yes it is a lot of ruckus but let's be honest, if he had given money to a charity, it would not have made the news.

True!He has been doing charity since 10 years ,but that wasn't reported with such intensity.

Not only should he be arrested but he should face the maximum penalty possible. As a visitor to a foreign country he should respect their laws. As someone that is privileged he should set a good example by obeying those laws, when, as is here the case, he does not the penalty should be all the more severe. all the best urban

I agree that he should respect the country. And I also think they will give him the maximum penalty because he will be the example for the rest.

Richard Gere did big mistake because whatever he did is not an part of an Indian culture, 1st of all he has to know Indian's culture than he will do stage show or whatever he wants, he has to follow some rules and regulation of Indian's culture because he is in Indian.

I agree. I think that when you enter into another person's culture you need to become the culture. Sometimes Americans enter other cultures and do not respect it. And it's not just americans. I mean, humans in general are the same when it comes to the animal world. Look at the guy from Australia. He entered into the sea culture and did not respect it and got killed. As a people, we need to learn how to respect one another even if it does not make sense.
