Try getting him to learn yoga or Tai chi. You'll need to find a good teacher first. Also, if you have any knowledge of it, I would suggest getting some guidance and learning 'Pranayama'. This is a technique of regulating your breath so that your body gets the maximum oxygen. Practicing this everyday has relieved people of several very serious diseases, including arthritis.
You could also try alternative therapies like reiki or pranic healing. They are also known to have helped arthritic cases. They also help to reduce the side-effects of medicines.

I have inflammation of the joints in knees and a bulging disc in my lower back causing arthritic type pain. I do find some relief with over-the-counter rubs such as Icy Hot and also applying heat. I take Mobic and also I take arthritis strength Tylenol (over-the-counter) every morning.

first you must indicate what kind of arthritis your husband has right now bcouse there are a lot of kinds of arthritis.. if it is rheumatoid you can put hot compress on the area where there is inflammation about 20-30mins per application but be sure to check the area to be treated for any cuts or bruises so that it ill not agreviate the wound..

I understand what you are saying about too many medicines- that was me after my 2nd back surgery. Even months later I was still taking neurontin, vicodin, prescription sleeping pills, antidepressant, and a muscle relaxer. I ended up quiting most of them just cold turkey. I wasn't feeling any better taking them, so I decided why ruin my liver and who knows what else? It's been almost 4 years since all that, and with time the pain has lessened. I do have problems with inflammation in the SI joints, and restless leg syndrome. I take Ultram whenever I have the SI joint pain (it mimics sciatica).
My mom's pharmacist told her the best treatment for pain is coated aspirin. He said that it was one of the first things he learned in pharmacy school, and that drs don't tell patients that b/c most patients don't want to hear it. Since I am young and don't have any stomach problems, I will take aspirin or advil first. If it doesn't work, I'll take an ultram too.
Rest is also very important to me. I've had to learn the cues from my body, and know when I need to just go lay down on the bed and read. Although I do still take the prescription medicine Ultram, I tend to believe that I am "self-treating" with relaxation and coping techniques.
