Do you smell the milk even though you suspect it's rotten?

I don't smell it if I already know it's spoiled because it's smells awful. I actually try to hold my nose and breathe through my mouth while I pour it out. I do have to pour it because I have to recyle the bottle. I hate the smell of sour milk.

Mine comes in a big plastic bottle/jug. That's probably what she meant! Well I know I haven't seen an actualy bottle of milk in the stores, just the big plastic jugs with the handles!

I checked the last time I went to the supermarket and, sure enough, there is a very small amount of milk in glass bottles. It costs more money, of course.

So, you get your milk in a bottle? Wow! I didn't think bottles were still used for milk. Mine comes in either plastic or cardboard, though come to think of it, my supermarket may have bottles, but very, very few.

If it's a couple of days past the date on the carton then I just trash it. The old smell makes me gag.

That reminds me, have you ever seen that movie (or television show) Alien Nation? The aliens actually get drunk off of spoiled milk. There's even a scene where they show one of the characters pouring the chunky slop into a glass and then downing it. Rather disgusting.

I didn't think there really was such a thing as a milk bar, as depicted in that film, but evidently, there was. So odd.

My first instict was wasting money, but I think there's a part of me that wants to get that nasty whiff, almost as if I enjoy it on some sick level. :)

YES I do this too. Even if I know it's expired/rotten and I know I wont use it, I still smell it! I wonder why! So strange, and because it of course smells terrible, I feel sick to my stomach after smelling it. You would think that would make me stop, but it doesn't! I guess some things are just habit after awhile!

I'm going to have to do some research. I took two years of psychology, so you would think I'd know why we do these things. Someone, somewhere, must have written an article on this!

I just had this image of a far-away voice sounding in our subconcious, "SMELL . . . THE . . . MILK," at which point, we rise from our beds and stumble over to the refridgerator. *grin*
Okay, I've seen one too many zombie movies.

Okay, I feel better. I tend to believe I'm a freak, but it's good to be with like-minded inviduals. *grin*

LOL....if you are a freak....then so am I.
I do that all the time.If the milk has been sitting open for more than two days....I have to smell it.I'd rather sniff the bad milk than accidently take a drink.I don't think there is anything that makes me gag more then taking a big drink of soured milk and that taste is almost impossible to get out of your mouth.
I guess smelling it....even if you are sure it's gone bad....is just a way to reasure yourself that you are not just throwing it out for no reason.

Yikes! I had never thought of accidentally drinking spoiled milk. While I might smell it, I don't think I'd want it in my mouth. *laugh out loud*

yup.i guess it's to evaluate the level of possible stink,as in "save" or "chuck out".
of course if it's already chunky, then i skip it.

Chunky, in my opinion, works best for peanut butter, not milk. It used to work well for candy bars, too, but not anymore. Who remembers the Chunky Bar?

Being a "country girl"....I smell it...I was trained to do so...it is instinct and I just don't think about it.....I do live on a small farm but we have no milk cows...I buy milk at the grocery store.....I can plainly see the date of supposed expiration; but I still smell it.
I have to honestly say until this discussion...I never even realized that I do this.....wonder what other "crazy" things I do without a thought....
Thanks for another great topic, my friend.

That's a good point, tina! I bet we have a lot of strange habits that are so ingrained into us that we barely take notice. Well, if I can think of any others, I'll start another discussion!

What's even worse than sniffing it is not sniffing it! On more than one occasion, I've chugged a glass of milk (I really like milk! lol) only to discover halfway through that something was...peculiar. Bleh. You'd think I'd learn, but...well, let's just say that I'm not that bright.
Hmmm...so you acually kinda LIKE the smell of sour milk, huh?
*splashes some sour milk behind each ear and whistles to himself as he wanders casually out of the discussion*
