If you're work or computer needs can be found in Windows XP, then just stay to XP until the Vista is stable.
I remember when I was using Win98, WinXP came but the 1st version has plenty of bugs that's why there's XP service pack 2 for WinXP.
As a programmer, softwares like windows have bugs. Especially the new one. Just wait for atleast 2 years to have a stable Windows Vista.
I'm contentend with my XP for now because it gives and serves all my computing needs. But if you find VISTA very useful to your needs then buy it.
P.S. by the way, I just talked to a friend. He just shifted to Vista but ended so frustrated because some of his softwares won't run in Vista. And with that you need new software that is Windows Vista based.
Hope this has helped you!

500Mb of Ram and 5Gb of ram shoul take actually the same effect.Vista need a high performance new generation system.High Hz and large cache is needed.64 bit processor is need for more performance.Vista is mainly created for AMD.Now there is Vista compatible intel processors are also available.

Well the advantages only start if you have the home premium version. The home basic is actually windows xp with a new sticker. The vista os are supposed to have better security and looks and also support direct x 10. It is the only operating system to do so ,thereby making it a must for gamers.

Windows vista is mainly for 64 bit processors. It consumes a large amount of hard disk space.Very low speed with my AMD 64 Athelon 2800+ processor.Take a new geration system with 1GB DDR2 ram

I guess that Microsoft would say that the advantages of having Vista is a more rounded and integrated Operating System. Personally I haven't tried it yet, but I don't think there are all that many advantages of upgrading right now. I think it is best to wait a while. There are still lots of security problems with the software that need plenty of updates to make right. My advice would be wait, but if you do get to decide to buy it then find out as much information as you can about the product first.

I received a new Dell (Inspiron E1705) laptop that came with Vista, and I LOVE it. The changes aren't very drastic. It all just looks a lot nicer and more organized than XP. So far I've only had one program that doesn't work because it's not compatible, but it's a free Serif program so they don't update it since it's free.
I probably would not upgrade from XP to Vista though, I have heard it may make your computer very slow if it doesn't have a lot of ram. Buying a new computer that already comes with Vista is an option, though.

I recently wrote a review of Vista. Sorry I didn't notice your post until I had posted mine. I hope you'll read it and it helps you make a more informed decision.

the disadvantage of windows vista is that it uses a lot of system resources and i have heard that it is not able to run some of the software which are running perfectly on xp and windows vista also has some bugs and it's service pack is not yet introduced so it is not so secure like xp with service pack 2 is.
