When putting sunscreen on an infant (9.5mnths) do you put it on his face. Being careful of course to stay away from the eyes. If not how do you protect his face, and top of the head? He has hair, but I don't think it's thick enough to protect against the sun!

One of the most terrible memories I have is the year that all of us, the entire family, at one point or another had sunscreen in our eyes. It burns!!!! I was miserable all day. We put sunscreen on and waited for over 30 minutes to go out into the sun at the beach. For about an hour we were okay and then apparently the heat melted the sunscreen or somehting...but we were all screaming in pain as it ran into our eyes. My daughter was only 1 year old at the time...I had been so careful not to get it too close to her eyes. It was a horrible day! Anyway, I do believe that now they have specially formulated sunscreens for use on the face. One that I have seen is called 'Baby Faces.' At least if it gets in the eys it won't burn!! As for the head, yes it will burn!! For sure put a hat on your son or use the sunscreen! Don't forget the tops of his little ears! My son's ears burnt one year, that was a miserable year too! Good luck!

I completely forgot about the tops of his ears! I ended up putting it on his face being careful of the eyes, and all was well until we got home and we were letting him crawl around outside. All of a sudden one eye was all red, and there were red blotches above it. Couldn't figure out what could have happened, but maybe the sunscreen did melt into his eye! It didn't seem to bother him, thank God, besides being itchy. I'll look into a sunscreen for his face! Thanks.

I was a little hesitant to put sunscreen on my children at that age. I may be over-cautious, but I was worried about it absorbing into their skin, and that they might also ingest some.
I dressed them in U.V. blocking outfits and hats, and encouraged playing in the shade. We'd set up a large parasol to play under, if we went anywhere where there wasn't any shade.

I do need to get him a hat, but I don't drive so he's i nthe stroller, and even a hat doesn't block all the UVs unfortunately. That was a concern I had to about it being absorbed, but it's safe for over 6 months so I'm not too too worried. I just wish I didn't have to put anything on him!

Our ped said that sunscreen (baby stuff!) is ok at 6 months. DS didn't have much hair either, so we'd put it on his head. Sometimes he'd leave a hat on, but not usually. It made his blond hair show up more. :) On his face, I put a little bit on his cheek and carefully rubbed it on his face, getting cheeks, chin, nose, ears & forehead mostly. Use the big parts of your hands rather than the fingertips that are more likely to connect with an eye. You'll get used to it. It's better than trying to deal with a sunburned baby!
