People Are So Cruel Sometimes!

This is an article from ASPCA.org. When I read it, tears came to my eyes. I cannot understand how some people can be so cruel and uncaring to animals like this. It makes me wonder how they treat the humans in their lives....not very kindly, I bet. Please read on:
BROOKLYN MAN BUSTED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY
On the evening of Wednesday, April 11, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents arrested 36-year-old Brooklyn resident Joe Petcka for beating to death his female acquaintance’s pet cat. Norman, an orange long-haired domestic feline, suffered numerous blows to his body in the downtown Manhattan apartment where he lived with his owner. Petcka, who spent time alone in the apartment on the afternoon that Norman was beaten, was gone when his acquaintance came home to find her cat no longer alive.
Norman’s body was taken to a Manhattan veterinarian who, after pronouncing him dead, immediately notified the ASPCA. Veterinarians at the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital performed a necropsy and discovered that the feline, who weighed just 7 1/2 pounds, had sustained numerous broken bones and teeth.
After a one-month-long investigation conducted by the ASPCA, Special Agent Richard Ryan arrested Petcka without incident. The 205-pound actor and former professional baseball player claimed that he beat the cat in self-defense.
Petcka has been charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony punishable by up to two years in prison. Judge Eileen Koretz has set bail at $2,500, though the prosecutor requested it be set at $20,000.
Says Joe Pentangelo, Assistant Director of ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement, “Norman’s injuries are indicative of true and ugly violence.”

As far as I am concerned this was not a man , he was a monster and a bully, If he did this to a cat that could scratch him back what would he do to babies , it hardly bares thinking about , the poor wee defenseless cat what could it possibly have done to deserve this , I am a wee woman but I would just like a bit of time in a room alone with this guy grrrrrr . how can some people do things to animals or people he is sick in the head xx

This story reminds me of my ex coworker's story about someone killing the cat by cornering it under a bed and then pulled the bed down. The thing about cats are sometimes they keep coming back to their owners, even if these people abused them before. Such beautiful loving animals don't deserve such treatment.
I really hope these animal abusers spend time in jail, let's see if they can survive abuse in prison.

You are so right hon. Cats are such gorgeous creatures whether they are tame or feral, and none of them deserve to be hurt in any way, shape, or form. I also wish the fines were higher for abusers like that to really show them that there is a price to pay, in more ways than one, for their behavior.

just to add : the fine should be even higher than $ 20,000 any amount that will make him paying forever so he won't forget what he's done

would you say petcka is not cruel if he killed your pet? do you have a pet yourself? animals are living beings too. if there is no cow milk, would you survive? do something to the employer, don't come here and say that oh it's only an animal

I am just emphasing the how cruel people are by telling even the human being treated like animals. I, myself, do not even kill an ant if does not do any harm to me. Do you think I will appreciate killing animals. Most of the animals in our religion considered to be god, then how do you expect I will appreciate killing animals.

I certainly hope he gets the two years in jail. There is something wrong with the guy. Kind of hard to believe that self defense plea isnt it. Big tough guy attacked by 7 pound cat. How can someone be flled with so much rage and hate to keep on repeatedly beating something so small and helpless. I hope he never has kids.

I think this guy should either loose everything to the ASPCA, or have to pay support to them for the rest of his life to remind him how much of a jerk he was. People like that, to make them understand how wrong they were you have to hit them where it hurts the most. Their wallet.

I know what you mean. Stories like this are unfortunatly a daily occurance. I do not see how anyone could beat another living creature be it human or animal especially not the defenseless child or animal. I have three very spoiled furry lovebugs and although I get angry at their actions I would never hurt them. Besides if I scold my dog it hurts his feelings and he cries (real tears).

our dog is a miniature daschound complete with big brown eyes that he has mastered making teary and actually crying. He is so sad and pathetic you can't help but love him. I don't scold him often cause not only does it break his heart but it breaks mine too lol. Our cats however are the masters of "I don't care" and "Are you talking to me?" and "Are you still talking?". Of course one has a good excuse for his aloofness he is deaf so he really literally doesn't hear us.

How upsetting! When I was going to school I had heard of a classmate that liked to abuse animals and would bury cats in the ground with their heads sticking out. He would then kill them with a lawn mower. I have never forgotten about that and I don't tolerate animal abuse. My dog was in an abusive situation and the owner asked me to take him in for her. When she came back five months later to ask for him back I refused. I had brought him through so much and he is such a good dog. I can't give him up and he is my best friend.
It sounds like Petcka has violent behavior issues. That is very upsetting. He should have to pay the higher bail, serve major time and be beaten senseless with a baseball bat!

I second that! One of my dogs, Buddy, found me last year, during my daughter's birthday party. He was so skinny that I could count every rib and every vertebrae. So I ended up taking him home, and getting him back to health. Come to find out, the owner lived down the street from where we had the party, and he was breeding Buddy for fighting. The guy tried to get Buddy back, and I refused. Turns out a week or so later, the rest of the dogs he had were removed from the home for cruelty. People like him and Petka should never be allowed near animals ever again.

If one can beat one''s fellow beings , wife, kids or friends then why not animals. We are basically animals just proud to bear a tag that we a re social animals. we are still savages who love blood. There is so much evil inside us that we do not see others with compassion.
I was witness to boys who threw a dog in to a dirty open sewer and were laughing. Even I hesitated for a second to put my hand in there but then braced myself as he would have drowned in there and pulled him out by pushing my hand under his belly. I still shrug when I remember that. I washed my hands at least five times after that but I still think back and feel where is the innocense and compassion little boys are supposed to be full of.
this incident reminds me of that only. I hope he becomes an exmaple to all little boys to learn from twhat hapens when you are cruel to animals.

It is hard to believe that anyone can be that cruel. I know that many people hate cats without any reason...and this is so sad...I am looking at my cat now...and I am thinking...I wish Petcka will spend 2 years in jail...it will not bring back small cat...self defense??? from cat???

I think these people are insane. Or they think it is a kind of pleasure. How do you think about hunting? Some people hunt just for fun. They don't the meat from animals for food or earn living. I think you must hate these kind of behavior.

This is ridiculous! A huge guy like him claiming self defense against a 7 pound cat? What an as$!
It makes me wonder what sort of thoughts must be going through someone's head to do something like that. I only hope he gets the 2 years in prison for it, and maybe he'll get to knowing how his victim felt when he gets beaten in prison.

Animal cruelty is one subject that truly makes my blood boil. Animals are helpless, and depend on us to take care of them, and when someone treats an animal like this, it is just plain wrong, and I, for one, would like to see much stiffer penalties for deliberate acts of cruelty. In fact, if I were the one deciding what would happen to the perp, it would be an eye for an eye. Whatever they dished out to the animal is exactly what I'd like to see done to them.

He beat the cat in self defense. That is insane. What could the cat have done to him beside scratch him. My boyfriend would have never done anything like that but if he ever did, he would have never even made it to jail because I would have killed him.

Oh...we are definitely two peas in a pod then. I would do the same to my hubby if he did something like that. But no worries there.....he may be big and gruff, but he is such a big softie when it comes to animals. He spoils them and cuddles them more than I do sometimes.

Oh my gosh, that's so awful!!!! I don't understand how anyone could want to hurt a sweet little animal like that. Self defense?! Yeah, I bet that 7.5 pound cat was really a threat to a 205 pound pro athlete! Ugh, I just can't believe how mean some people can be. I even feel guilty if I just accidentally bump into my cat or step on her tail or something, I always apologize and give her hugs and make sure she's ok. I can't imagine actually hurting her on purpose! I hope that guy gets the strictest punishment, and I sure hope that girl stays away from him now!

My daughter loves to watch Animal Planet. She really loves the animal rescue shows. She will often come out to tell us how mean and cruel someone was to an animal. When I have watched these shows it angers me that the abusers just get a slap on the wrist. It takes a real idiot to be able to hurt defenseless creatures in such a way.
