If you catch him doing it then either hit him with the item that he is chewing on or put it in his mouth and hit him on the butt or on the nose. If you do it enough he'll remember.

Buy him some appropriate toys as well as a crate. When you can't keep an eye on him, crate him with some toys.

Get him rawhide and some big bones from the butcher's. Dog's like to play with their teeth, so give him some tasty alternatives...

Yes KONG TOYS, we used to have a Sheppard Pitt bull mix and he chewed and destroyed just about anything that he could fit in his mouth. A trainer recommended that we try KONG TOYS because they are indestructible. Let me tell you those things truly ARE.
They have a hole in the center that you can smear some peanut butter and that makes the toy even more appealing. Then anytime that the dog is chewing something that they are not supposed to take it away and replace it with the Kong.

Well, here goes my advice:
Buy your dog some toys. If he keeps on chewing sandals and CD's, scold him. Around the fifth time, he'll learn it is wrong. When you scold him, tell him it's wrong to chew sandals, and give him his toys.
