The first mention of cancer in history was at about 3000 BC, in egypt papyruses. Hypocratese gave cancer its name, because the tumors reminded him of cancer.
Cancer is considered to be the no.2 lethal disease - one after heart deseases.
1 out of 3 people will have cancer, 1 out of every 4 men who have cancer would die of cancer while 1 out every 5 women who have cancer would die of cancer. The desease usualy breaks after the age of 50, due to a high mutation rate.
There are more than 100 kinds of cancer, and the most common are: breast, lungs, prostate and large intestines cancer. Breast and intestine cancer were found to have a genetic origins.
Tomurs split into two - Maligant, which sprouts to many parts of the body, and Benign, which does not spread, do?sn't get deep, and usualy not lethal.
Causes of cancer split into three groups:
1) DNA mutations - by radiation, alcohol, tobbaco, random mutations, genetic mutations.
2) Infections - 20% of cancers are caused by viruses! Herpes, HPV, hepatytis B and C and the likes.
3) Tumor promotors - Hormones that might cause the development of cancer, like estrogene (a prolonged use of pills might cause cancer).
The best treatment is prevention and early detection. Precentage of survival depends on the earliness of detection. Sometimes it is possible to detect cancer by gene detection methods. There are many medicines, each with its terrible side effects. These are pretty good reasons to why the best treatment is prevention...
Has this short article helped you in any way? Do you have anything to add? Any questions to ask?

Hello healthkeep. I'm so glad to run into this post. This is very informative and has refreshed my memory of things I've learned in school. Thanks. So many questions of course. Are you in the medical profession? I have family members with cancer. What is the probability of first degree cousins having it? Or is it just mother-daughter that has the highest risk?

I hope music sickness would be the only you'll know. :)
About me - I am a neuroscientist (which includes biology, computers and psychology). I am also a wellness consultant.
All our lives are one big probability. You have factors that increase the chances for something to happen, and factors the decrease it. Diseases, and cancer included, are no different.
One risk factor for cancer is that it runs in one's family. The closer a family memeber to the one who has cancer, the higher the risk - IF the source is realy inheritance (take a look at that big if).
You shouldn't live in constant fear of cancer. You should live your life as healthy and happy as you can, enjoy every minute while minoring the risks for every disesase. Preventing cancer also results in healhty life - excedrcise, eat well, less stress etc.
The main part of my work as a wellness consultant is to show people a way of living a balanced healthy life. It is not as hard as one might think...

I used to think music will be the only sickness for me. Until myLot came along! :) Wow. I am sincerely grateful for all these things you have said. I'll have to think and read and think some more about all you said. :) My mind is still on music so early in the morning such as this. I'm beginning to think I want a wellness consultant such as you. But I guess the price is high to go on a consulting session is it not? *sigh* I wish I could just pay people in music notes hahaha. I'm crazy I know.

Unfortunatly, having a personal aquintance with cancer is inevitable, as surly can be understood from the statistics. I am sorry to read about your painful experience, and of course I understand.
Stress and unbalanced life are indeed the no. 1 cause for all illness (80% of world illness is due to stress!).
To explain it with relation to what I wrote, more stress means we get more hormones and change our metabolism. Therefor, our body is succeptible to more mutations and we enter a never ending loop of mutations and hormones which create more stress which... well, it is a loop...
I cannot agree with you more - that is what I am telling people and try to teach as best I can.
I wish you a lot of health!
