The first thing I would suggest is to have a realistic body image. Not everyone is genetically built to be super skinny, and as we get older we tend to pack on a few more pounds which is often normal. Decide on a realistic image and shoot for that, and I would shy away from picking an ideal weight, because weight in and of itself is not the issue.
Here are some tips that can help you get in better shape and stay that way:
1. Eat 4-6 small, healthy meals a day.
This works pretty well because after 3-4 hours of not eating your body goes into starvation mode. It doesn't burn the food you eat as fuel, rather it tries to save calories and store them as fat on your body, so it can feed of it later in needed. If you do eat several meals a day, your body will burn the food you eat and also begin to start using the fat stored in your body as fuel.
2. Excercise 3-4 times a week.
Excercise is the key. I would suggest doing some form of aerobic excerise to burn calories and then some kind of weight training to build/tone muscle. Muscle burns more calories than fat when in a resting state. So you will burn more calories just by having more muscle. When you do add muscle you tend to gain weight because muscle weighs more than fat. However, you will tend to go down in waist/dress sizes at the same time.
I hope these suggestions help, you'll notice I didn't mention dieting, because really all these fad diets don't work. They aren't healthy, and it bad to flucuate up in down in weight.
