Do you think going to the movies is too expensive?

At $15 a ticket plus a minimum of $13 if you want popcorn and a drink. If you were going on a date it would be just under $50. In my opinion it's much better value to stay home, watch a new release DVD and have chinese or pizza's or something.
For a family of 4 the tickets alone are $55 which to me seems a lot for a couple of hours of entertainment.
What do you think?

Personally I prefer a cuddling in a nice couch with my loved one in front of the idiot box. It may not have all the great effects of the big screen but it's way more warming :)

far too expensive nowadays!! especially since a number of movies in the past couple of years that i really expected to love, turned out to be complete waste of money!
id rather rent the dvd, and be in my own home, not having to worry that its too crowded and we cant find seats to sit together..or that ppl wont stop talking during the movie (which makes me want to hit ppl lol!) or that im gonna spend $50 in snacks and drink alone for all 4 of us to be eating!!

I think that going to the movies is way too expensive. I'd rather just wait for the movie to come out on video. I have no desire to pay that much to see it on a BIIIIIG screen, when I can pay 3 bucks and see it up close on my computer. I don't remember the last time I went to the movies.

Do you mean your computer's not fast enough to play DVD's or to download movies? I don't download movies at all, I just watch the DVD's on my computer, since my TV is old, and won't work with a DVD player.

Hi pilbara, Your not wrong there. The last time we went to the movies as a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children, it cost us quiet a bit, more then I has expected. After buying popcorn, drinks and an ice cream, the total came to $58.00, where as we could have stayed home hire a couple of new release DVD's and still had pop corn, drink and ice cream for much less... We choose this way to enjoy our movies now...

I think that they are expensive! I live miles away from the mall/ movie theater and by the time I would pay for gas, a drink, snacks and the movie tickets I would be broke! So i just wait until it either can be rented or bought or watched on tv! I think its much cheaper and if you buy the movie you can watch it over and over and when you are done give it away or sell it !

That is definitely to expensive. Think about this. You can rent a movie tape for a lot less than than. I haven't been to a theater in a very long time because of the expense of it. I don't miss it at all.

We don't go to the movies often for that reason. We have a service here in the US Netflix.. I rent movies via the internet and they ship them out 3 at a time. We always have family movie night, with microwave popcorn, I buy the boys mini sodas (they come in mini cans they are cute) and we all watch movies. It was "Night at the Museum" yesterday.

Wow, I'm assuming that this is in US dollars. That's very expensive indeed.
It costs about $9.50 to watch a movie in my country during the weekend and we are all complaining about the high cost. But the prices you quoted are much higher than this.
So if we are really keen to watch a movie on the big screen, we could pop over to a neighbouring country. It costs much less to watch movies over there.
Otherwise, the cheapest alternative would be to wait for the DVD release and rent that instead.

Even in Aussie dollars, those prices sure are still high.
Luckily for us, we could cross over to another country in about 15 minutes to watch a movie. Prvided there's no traffic jam.
You could also enjoy the lower prices when you visit Asia. :)

OMG yes...gee..where you are it's $15...holy moly..and I thought $10 was bad..I'm way too picky about going to movies..there are so many I'd like to see, but my budget just won't allow to see too many movies..you better believe though that I'll see the next Harry Potter movie..

Your right, movie theatres are rediculous overpriced. Which is why i mostly only go on discount nights. Every Tuesday at my local theatre, the tickets are only 420, roughly around the price it would cost to rent a new release and some movie stores, so then its worth it.
