Nuclear Power for Australia!

Nuclear Energy - The core of a small Nuclear Reactor used in Switzerland.

Our Prime Minister has just approved the development of nuclear power for Australia. Australia has resisted the use of nuclear power for some time, particularly my state. We only have one nuclear reactor, that is at Lucas Heights in Sydney. It is supposedly only used for experimenting. I used to belong to the Campaign Against Nuclear Energy. Now I am not sure what to think? One of the sites where the Government wanted to put a nuclear power station was just out from my home city, where I was brought up. There still seem to be so many risks associated with nuclear power plants, but I guess technology has improved safeguards somewhat. Australia has the largest uranium deposits in the World, & our state has the largest Uranium mine in the World. ie. we are the worlds biggest supplier. Does this mean it should be okay for us to use nuclear power? Who wants a nuclear power plant in their back yard?

As someone with a degree in nuclear engineering, working on my masters I can say that you can probably sleep easy. Nuclear engineering has come a LONG way since Chernobyl. We have learned how to properly store radioactive waste so that it does not contaminate the environment. There is absolutely no by-products from a nuclear power site. A lot of people think the steam they produce is somehow harmful. Its not. Its just water. The chances of something going awry at a nuclear fission plant these days are so slim you may as well count on being struck by lightening. Nuclear power is safe, cheap and very effective. And for the person who suggested coal, I'd like to see your face when they build a coal plant behind your house. Talk about dirty! Coal produces so much air pollution!

Nuclear power is better since one plant can light many homes .But since its in ur backyard it doesnt sound really good because of health hazards.

I like the concept of energy aplenty however at what cost. Cherobyl is a prime example of how this technology can bite us back. With solar and wind power and wave power all viable optons it is really unnecessary to put ourselves into harms way. I am a solar and wind power girl and would not live where I could become a glow in the dark, falling apart entity. Not what was designed for me and all of humanity. Good luck with this.

I know that I would not want one even close to where I live. I remember the Chernobyl disaster and all the radiation that was spread.

Hello, jennybianca, I think the only issues we have to conisder is the risk related with nuclear power, honestly risks stillexist no matter how good the technology is ,may be the chance can be reduced to minimum, but in case there is something wrong ,there may be huge disaster and i cannot even imagine the consequences. But on a whole, it may be an advantage to develop nuclear power as coal and oil is scarce resource, unclear power is one way to solve the problem by providing a relatively lower cost to generate electricity. So it is really hard to say whether the benefits will outweigh the risks, but I think most of the people will not be positive about it.

The thought of a nuclear power plant near me would be scary, because I don't know anything about it. Maybe it is safer now, but I have a hard time believing it could be safe enough.

Peace is more important than making nuclear.. country with nuclear power enabled. WE NEED PEACE!! NOT WAR!
