as you know.. before entering a college.. you can decide whether to live in the hostel situated inside the college.. or staying in apartment or houses outside the college.. there are many pros and cons for both.. which do you prefer? and why? i think staying in the hostel is not that good because your activity is limited by the warden.. they won't let you hang out too late.. and you have to follow their rules.. unlike staying outside.. you can play as the night is still young.. haha.. but.. you see.. staying in hostel gives you better security compared to the latter one.. so how? which do you prefer and most importantly. why?

Well before i started the university i did rent an apartment for 4 years near the university and did experience living in a rented house with all of his freedom, but when i entered the university and saw that i will be having a day schedule that will be consisting of 8 hours of lectures each day and another 5 hours of practical studio group, i decided that the best thing to do is stay at the hostel inside the university territory, i just added up facts, and got to the conclusion, that the only time that i will be there is when i will be sleeping, and that it will cost me less money, so that's what i did for four years, and i think that was the best decision for that time.

Hi Charles, yes I can understand why it would not be good to stay in the hostel and of course they would have rules that you would have to obey. I would stay outside in a house as it is more private and I prefer to be away from the college so that is why I would prefer it more.

it's better to stay outside if it's walking distance to college? maybe around 5 - 10 minutes walk?

Hello, charleschan, there may be pros and cons in these two choices. If you rent a house by yourself, you will need to do the housework and cook by yourself, you may feel tired as you also need to study at the same time, but you can concentrate in your study more since you will not have many distractions.
If you are living in the hostels, you do not need to wory about the houskeeping work, your meals may also be provided and you do not need to cook by yourself, but you may get a lot of distraction as your roomates will try to ask you to play with them and it is hard to concentrate to study.
I think if you can resist the temptations from other roomates and stay in your room for study, it may be better to stay at the hostel.

yep.. you're so right.. staying outside.. need to cook by myself.. and it's really tiring at times.... even if i stay outside.. i still have to go for that twin sharing rooms.. because it's cheaper.. so i will have a roommate too.. and i can't compromise with my current roommate now.. he always play computer games.. argh

I went to school in the US and I stayed outside because of two main reasons. The first one was due to the food that they served at the hostels were not prepared for Muslims and the second reason was that it was more expensive to stay there compared to sharing a whole house with a few friends.

erm.. yes.. you're right... but in my college.. there's no food prepared for hostel students.. they just have to go out and eat like any others staying outside.. so.. it doesn't make any difference right?

Well it really depends on how long one is planning to stay. I'm an ex-hostalite myself and I strongly advice you to go and live with the locals in order to appreciate the experience. Living in a hostel, even the University hostel could be interesting, depending on the state of the place. In Pune however, people often share their appartments.
You could then rent a room in a house with 3 other students. The accommodation office of the university will provide you with a list of potential rooms. You simply phone and visit. I would prefer renting an apartment. It gives us liberty to live thw way we want to.

I prefer rented accomodation. You have full control of your bills and you can choose what kind of phone and internet services you like to use.
Safety is not much a guarantee even if you are living in hostels. There was someone who got mugged at the uni's accomodation area a few months before. I think its because the uni's accomodation is further away from the university.
I do believe hostels are more noisy than rented accomodation. You can rent a nice 2 bedroom apartment and get another student to take the other room. Its certainly more peaceful compared to hostels where you can get lots of rooms on one floor or 5 person units.
Also university accomodation have small rooms and single beds. Its expensive too. For the same price, I can get a larger room in a rented accomodation (its nearer to my university as well.
