Why somebody could miss someone else?

Out of the blue, the thought of my grand father came to mind. Flashes of the most memorable times i spent with him. Stories about the Japanese Occupation in Singapore when he was the POW during that time. Story on how he escaped. His serene face and his heart warming smile. It doesn't take a lot to make him smile. Just say how handsome he look after that haircut he just had is enough to see that smile and hear a giggle or two.
It has been about 13 years since his passing. But i still miss him. Miss his company, his thoughtfulness, his presence, his kind words and gentle ways. I just feel that i've not spent enough time with him even though we've been for many holidays together.
Have you ever miss someone so bad? Have you ever miss someone even though they are stil alive? Is it a natural emotional reaction? What makes you miss them? What do you miss about being with them?

when days are passed by and memories keep flashing in your mind you keep reverting to the old days, so its very natural that you may miss the moments of the olden days or the people who were there with you at that time. your love for some person is one factor in your missing that person. another factor could be that you usually are so used to having your relatives around that when they go away you just cant pass on and continue your life without them.
i often miss my father who is living abroad. he calls daily, but there are many moments when we feel his absence a lot, example while picnicking, eating something delicious. etc. its the most natural emotion to miss some loved one who is not around.

I have miss my maternal grandmother so much who passed away about 4 years ago. I still dream of her even now. I love the way she took care of me and taught me. I miss just spending time with her being sweet to her and just talking to her. I miss her love and her very good fashion sense too.
