I am writing from my husband's computer. I was working on my laptop and then all of a sudden it shut down by itself. When I turn it on again it gives me many choices like start in safe mode, etc. I tried each one of the choices but it doesn't work. When all the steps are finished it shuts down again. Windows restarts again but it doesn't give me any time to restore the system to a previous point for example. It just shuts down by completely turning off the computer.
I need some help with this please and thank you for your time. I'm sure I have a virus on it but I don't know what to do.

before you reformat the drive try this first. insert your original XP cd and then boot the computer from that disk and then go to the Windows Recovery console, if you are able to continue there then you can perform system restore from there

Thank you very much. I will try to do that tomorrow and will tell you the results. If this works it will save me from reformating my hard drive. Thank you for your advice.

I have had the same problem before but was due to a broken CPU holder. The broken holder housed the CPU cooling fan and that fan stopped working when the holder broke. as such, I could have the PC on for a short while and it would stopped when it got overheated. I am not sure whether yours is a similar problem but I suggest that you take to the nearest service center for a check up.
One other reason that can caus this is virus infection on your laptop. This is more serious as you might need to reformat your Harddisk. I hope that is not the case.

it could very well be also an overheating problem, try working on a more ventilated area or cooler area or have a fan blowing on the laptop and see if it helps.

Thank you shakeroo. For now it's working again and it has not shut down since I turned it on this morning. We will see. I would guess that if it was a virus then it would not work again. Thanks again!

First i'm really sorry , as it seems ur computer got really infected with virus , if u don't have any important files in ur C drive or the drive in which the OS(operating system) is present , then i would suggest u to simply install the OS(windows) again by formatting just the C drive but not the other drives so that you won't loose the data you got in other drives , in the meanwhile time i will try to find some help too if i find will tell u mam !!

Thank you very much kool_buddy. You know what I just turned it on again and it works! I was playing songs at the same time and it seems that the problem might from the computer being overheated. Here is what I read on a website: Itunes, RealPlayer, Windows Media player, etc. require a lot of processing power to decompress and decode music files, which can cause the system to get hot and shut down.
My laptop is working now and I didn't do anything. It just came back on its own. But I will see if the problem comes back and in that case I will just follow your instructions and reformat my hard drive.
Thank you very much kool_buddy.

Well kool_buddy. Now it just shut off again after some time. I guess I will have to reformat the hard drive to get rid of any viruses. I will need to gather the steps needed to do that safely. Thank you!
