I can understand your hesitance, but you really can't fund your PayPal account without a bank account or earnings deposited by someone else. You don't have anything to worry about, though. I have been using PayPal for 7 years, now, and they are still the most trusted payment processor on the Internet. Their security is as tight as Ft. Knox, and they are extremely trustworthy.

I don't know how they do it now, but when I opened my account, I had to fax a copy of my driver's license to prove I am me, and they sent a verification letter to my home, which I had to fax back to verify my residence. They verify your bank account by making two small deposits to it, and then you have to log in and type in the amounts. The whole procedure takes a few days, but it is necessary to adhere to various laws. Now, being unverified doesn't affect your ability to send or receive money from individuals, but if you want to use your account for business purposes, it has to be fully verified first. AlertPay, as far as I know is the only other payment processor that has the same procedures in place.

but what if someone stole your paypal password? would you be worried?
shouldn't paypal also send a small deposit to your bank account and ask what that deposit is so that when anyone withdraws money from your bank account - they have to know those amounts?
I'm saying that would they have a similar process for withdrawing money?
