hope i can put my 2 cents into this discussion to help you out. get a jug of antifreeze and carry it in the back of car for emergencies think you call it the boot. just adding water doesn't always solve the problem as you are diluting the antifreeze that is in car. it has a higher water temperature then just plain water. it is usually premixed from the garage or store where you get it. if you just add plain water to rad or filler pot under hood (bonnet) you are diluting what you do have in the engine and can cause it to over heat again. don't know about your engines over there but ours will shut down if they get too hot to prevent damage. good thing for the people that are engine challenged. lol i usually check mine every fill up doesn't take long and saves a lot of grief later. if we ever do get the chance to meet when i'm there in a few weeks i could show you how to change a flat tire pretty easy its not that hard. could show you how to check all your fluids and a few basics if you wanted. up to you. well take care and safe driving down the road. and i know you English love to zip those little cars all around scares the h3ll out of me sometimes. surprising what you can do with your 30 horse power.lol well 22 may will be here soon enough i guess. hope to see you at the market maybe one of your friends hopefully...

On the short term, it works, but make sure you add anti-freeze to it as soon as you can. While plain water is good in keeping the engine cool, antifreeze does several things with the water. First, it keeps it from turning to ice in the winter. The other main thing is that antifreeze contain special things that keeps the water from causing the engine insides from rusting.

Oh - next assignment: disconnect & remove engine, place it beside the car, & then pur it back in & connect it back. One of those things where easier said than done REALLY takes new meaning.

wow sometimes things just work if you apply a bit of common sense. I just remebered my good day. Its been more than ten years tothat incident. That time in India main language was dos for computers and a class was started for army wives to learn computers. I reached to the calls on second day and the instructor told me computers are not booting there is some technical glitch so no class. I had previously worked on microsoft's word for my thess on my cousine's computer and he used to set up everything and i just use dto type. still I said can I see, I saw at the bottom of the screen computer was asking to type a set of instructions and press enter. I jsut did thjat carefully and system started. Id id that for all of them and my ionstructor was so impressed. She said she was surprised why I was coming to learn there when I know computer languages so well. I didn't let out the secret with tongue in my cheek and chuckle in my heart I accepted everybody's praise that day. lol.I seriously think she lacked common sense but was loaded with lots of technical stuff.

Restoring equipments to work gives a very proud feeling indeed. Two days back my computer got stuck up, thrice I called the service engineer but may be he was busy and did not turn up.Finally I opened the computer just moved few wires and it started working it was so good a feeling to get the computer back in working condition.

Way to go!
It seems to me it's a good job you were there lol. I wouldn't have had a clue what to do. I'd have been flicking through the manual and then looking at the engine going erm ... hrmmm, right .... okay, maybe that WASN'T right after all LOL.

My dad always made sure each of his chldren knew some basic maintenance when we started to drive the car. He said that if we were going to drive then we needed to know how to take care of it. When you go to put more coolant/anti freeze in the radiator then look under the car for any leaks. If you don't see any start the car and look again. I would suggest that you get someone to teach you basic maintenance, things like changing a tire, changing the oil, checking all the fluids, which includes power stearing, coolant, wiper fluid and oil. You never know when you may need to know. It helps to have some idea what all those lines and things do and what they go to.

Good job!! You should be proud of yourself. Now I am not big on knowing what to do with cars but I do hope you took it in to have it looked out because if the coolant was out then there might be a leak. Take it from one that knows if you run the car without it well lets just say it isn't a good thing*L*
