Where has all the good science fiction gone?

There is a shortage of science fiction going on today. First I don't count shows like Heroes and the 4400 as science fiction in the traditional sense. Science fiction is shows like Star Trek and Stargate. Star Trek became a stale and stagnate franchise. After the finish of Deep Space 9, the series lost any uniqueness or spontaneity. Everything else just followed the same format without any newness. Stargate still shows promise although the series ran its course. But it still has many interesting plotlines to come. With a stargate the series can end up anywhere. One breath of fresh air is the Serenity series. It's gritty and interesting. Hope to see more of it. Look forward to a sequel. Science fiction is interesting because it delves deep into the imagination and says that we as a human race despite our problems will survive. Is there any other science fiction out there that is interesting?

I agree that Firefly and Serenity was an excellent show, unfortunately SciFi doesn't do great on regular tv, that's why they have the SciFi channel. I enjoyed Enterprise too, and enjoy the Stargate series, I also enjoyed Andromeda. The one show I espcially enjoyed was Lexx. There has still been SciFi, but even with SciFi it has gone more to adventure and action features then the SciFi of years ago. Solaris is an excelent example of the old style SciFi. I would also love to see a movie version of Stranger in a Strange Land.

Oh man, that is so true what you say about Solaris. I loved that movie with such an extreme passion. I also would like to see Stranger in a Strange Land put to movie format as well as Childhoods End. The special effect devil-looking alien overlords would be so much huge fun to see on a big screen.

I just saw "The Masters of Science Fiction" the other night, and I must say that I was a little disappointed. Where was the space technology? Where were the aliens? Where were the futuristic clothes and techology? Heroes and 4400 are science fiction because they all have superhuman abilities. Star Trek is great. Stargate the movie was great, the television shows could have been better. Firefly was cool. Kyle XY is becoming a really great science fiction show. We need more GREAT science fiction shows on television.

You know, I just watched (or should I say tried to watch) Flash Gordon season premier on Sci-fi Channel this past Friday. What a bust. It was truly horrendous. I never saw the original black and whites, but I fell in love with the 1980's movie. It is true what you say about no really good science fiction out there. Since Star Trek left the waves, it just hasn't been the same. I still watch re-runs of course, but I really ache for something new. I liked Earth Final Conflict that came out some years back. It went from a great show to nothing by the third season - all action and no tech, and the moral dilemmas became weak and unbelievable. I do get some humorous enjoyment out of Eureka these days. It is full of tech, much that could be right around the corner, but that is about all it has to offer. Its a pretty silly show in its plotlines.
