I don't think you ever stop studying music. I've played guitar for over 40 years, and have just recently taken up keyboards. I've also been learning music theory, yet again, courtesy of some software I found and by virtue of the fact that a guy I really like, Charles Mingus, was classically trained.
I saw some of his stuff, understood it, and got busy trying to figure out scales and things, and now I've got to the stage where I can whistle something and write it, play what I can write, and write what I can play... well, sometimes, anyway.
Have to admit, I took a long time to get into the theory. I was taught it in school, didn't like it, tried to teach myself, didn't like it, and now, because I'm actually learning so much, I'm enjoying it. That may be just because like any musician I'm a bit of a megalomaniac, and like to see my ideas work, but it really is fun, when I get it right.

I have studied music since school and played instruments such as the guitar and the flute. I am now learning how to play the keyboards and study music theory. I think it is a constant process of updating old skills and learning new ones. Music can be enjoyable to play, but it can also be quite scientific to learn the theory behind it. I am often amazed at how much Mathematics is actually involved. All in all I have been studying music in one shape or form for all my life. But seriously studying it including theory for about 5 years.
