Do you read self-help books? Do they really help?

Why do you read self-help books instead of trying to work things out for yourself? I used to read them, but they never really fit my problems, and the solutions sometimes seemed too simple considering how complex life really is. Do they help you or do you just wind up having to read more books to solve your problems?

Sometimes they help, sometimes-not. They can offer some ideas, some more information, but you are the person who decides what to do. There are some areals of life where it`s neccesary to get information from a book. If i dont know how to change my electricity, must i try practically how it works?

Good points. We don't have to re-invent the wheel for everything, but I wonder about people who depend on self-help books to solve their personal problems. I should have been more specific when I wrote up the discussion.

NOt really, they sometimes provide with good hints and are helpful but other times they give genral ideas that may not be helpful in a specific situation, so it depends.

Remembering everything I read in a self-hope book is a problem for me. If something sticks out because it gave me an "ah-ha" moment, then I will remember it. The books are no use to me if I don't remember what I read, unless I refer back to them. I am referring back to Dr. Phil's Relationship Rescue but I haven't for Family First and probably should. Right now I am reading N.O.W. No Opportunity Wasted by Phil Keoghan and some of the things he said stuck so hard to my psyche that I am actually considering doing them. His description of sky-diving through a cloud is so meticulous that it made me want to do it. I never thought I would ever want to sky-dive but he has made it sound like a fun thing to do. I don't use handyman type self-help books only behavioural books or spiritual books. But like I said, a lot doesn't stick to my brain so I usually forget what I've read. That is why with "The Secret" I got the DVD so I could watch it. Sinks in better. But I will have to watch it again.

Yes I do read them because sometimes there is something there that you might not have tried or need further insight on; Which is how and why I go to them. And yes, they really do help me.
