I know that many people have a recycle bin along with their trash can, but do you recycle in your home? Do you reuse shoe boxes, food containers, electronic equipment boxes. I am trying to get into it and out of it at the same time.
I need to get rid of things that I don't use immediately and keep some things instead of buying similar items. Now I will admit that since they have come out with decorative shoe boxes, the real ones look even more tacky than beofer, but I hold on to them out of habit.
I use to use the packaging from products to store things, but I no longer have the room. This being the last day in April, I feel like I should get some spring cleaning done, but I am having to much fun on Mylot.

hi rozie
I do not have a recycle bin in my home. But i've developed the habit of keeping shoe boxes, electronic gadget boxes, and use them to pack my belongings that need to be stash away in my store-room.
I've never thought of that action as recycling, but i'm glad you brought it up. Microwavable food containers are getting more and more common here, consumer usually get one with their food packed to go.
So yes, I've lots of those food containers at home, which I also use them to pack my lunches, or the salads or those raw food stored in the freezer.

Yes, we recycle. We reuse plastic bags from stores, etc! I don't see why we should throw away those stuff that still have a good use.

Now, for a long time I recycled the plastic bags from the grocery store and it got out of hand. At first it was easy, I had sort of a system. Whenever the plastic bags got low, that meant it was time to go shopping again.
Maybe, I had a shopping spree or something, because all of a sudden I saw bundles of plastic bags everywhere and I declared, never again. Now I see one or two bundles and I get nervous and start using them quickly or throw them out.

I am a recycler...I have a container that I use religiously and I also recycle things that don't go to the recycling center. By that I mean electronics ( broken phones, stereo equipment, etc) I seek out the folks that use them for parts or actually rebuild and repair them and I take them there. I recycle all computer things at the proper places. I reuse any cardboard boxes I can and those I can't get broken down and recycled. I try to take my cloth bags to the grocery store when I am buying my food and that way I don't end up using more paper or plastic bags. When shopping I don't take bags from each store I shop at..if everything will fit into one bag that is best for me. I also try not to purchase the products that have environmentally unfriendly packaging...it only encourages those companies to ignore the changes they need to make..I sound like I'm really strict but not really ...to keep our world in it's best shape we all need to be aware and making small changes in our habits can make big changes in the world...If no one would accept plastic bags from the stores we would send a strong message...those bags end up in our oceans and seas and kill millions of sealife each year...they will be here long after the rest of the earth is gone!!! They can be recycled but the energy it takes to do so is amazing!!! Therefore they aren't earth friendly. I,too, need to do my spring cleaning...and I will recycle all that I can..clothing to charity, etc. Happy cleaning!!

I have been recycling ever since I found 6 huge recycling bins in back of a large grocery store by my neighborhood. I recycle everything I can, and I feel great about it! I have noticed very much that before I recycled, my household used to throw away about 1.5 to 2 bags of garbage per day, but since we've recycled, we only toss about 4 bags of garbage per week. Its incredible how much less we dispose of after recycling. I understand how the so called lazy people may feel about recycling, but one thing that can help those lazy people recycle is that I for one, dont go to the recycling bins all the time, I only go once every 2 weeks until I have accumulated enough recycling material. Plus, I know that many recycling facilities actually purchase paper and other recyclable products, a popular one which is aluminum. There are lots of incentives to recycling. For example, polluting less, conserving more resources and fossil fuels which are needed in the productiton of just about anything. I have never heard that recycling does less good than bad.

I am so happy that you are able to recycle, however, I for one do not have the space to store the reusable trash. I live in an apartment and everything that is in here is right up under my nose.
This is great for people who have a garage or inclosed porch and such. I would very much like to do my part for the enviroment, however.

Well I feel that recycling is a really simple pracrtice everyone can incorporate into their daily lives that could potentially help save the environment. I personally do recycle whenever and whatever I can that is recyclable.

I need to be doing more for the enviroment. I do not "recycle" at the curb as yet I am still waiting to recieve my recycle boxes. I do however reuse items a lot in the house. I try to conserve water as much as possible. we save our cans to turn in (mom and daughter drink pop I only drink water so none of the cans are mine lol). I shred junk mail and newspapers to be used for my ceramics and for packing pieces to mail. I do want to do more though.

Yes fortunately our community supports recycling. And I find myself feeling a little guilty if I don't. As far as reuseing items like shoe boxes and the like I definitely try to reuse as much as I can.
A simple suggestion for shoe boxes is to buy some decorated contact paper to cover the shoe boxes with. This was they all match. Also plastc soda bottles can be made into effective minnow traps. I probably make about five a year. I take them out fishing with me and set them out while I fish. If I run out of minnows then I usually have a bunch in the traps.

Yes i do recycle the regular way but the creative way as well. WE make things out of stuff like you do. Small plastic containers are really good for sorting out sewing stuff. Shoe boxes are good for presents for wrapping purposes. My dad really like to creative recycle he makes tin men out of the tin cans and paints them and sells them they are all different and they sell well. It is nothing to see him in my garbage bin before the garbage men get there stealing my cans. You can do all kinds of stuff all ya got to do is have a good imagination.

I don't recycle, I don't know why. i've never really got the gumtion to get out and do it, its just not that important to me i guess. I understand that recycling cleans our earth, I guess i just don't have time for it.

Actually we do recycle. We recycle cardboard and stuff. Especially good is the bottles and cans. My mom sometimes makes a pretty penny on those when she takes them in to get recycled and such.

We do. In fact, we have six trash bins in the kitchen where paper, hard plastics, empty cans, biodegradables (fruit peelings etc.), diapers and other trash are placed. Only the last two goes to the garbage collectors while the biodegradables are buried in the backyard by my hubby and sons. The other materials we store in empty rice sacks we have at the back of the house when the bins get full and regularly give them to roaming poor kids in the neighborhood who collect these things so they can sell them at junk shops for extra money.
My husband and I are strong advocates of recycling because we believe in a cleaner and safer environment for our children and future generations. I hope more people will find time to do these things. It's really a matter of knowing what your goal is and having the will to continue practicing the action so that it becomes a habit.
We're on our fifth year of recycling now and all our kids are as conscientious as we are when it comes to throwing trash properly. They know enough to look for a trash can when we're out of the house and automatically put their candy wrappers in their pockets temporarily when they can't find any suitable container to throw them in. I am happy that this young, they are already good stewards of Mother Earth :)

In some limited way, but it's not like we're splitting every single product. Plastic, metal, carton, etc will all still end in one basket. Fruit and veggies in another and then finally paper separated as well.
But that is also simply which are being collected here like that, if you'd want to go separate further down you'll end up having to drive away your own trash. Now as good as recycling is, doubt many people would be in for that.
