Is Diablo worth the time you invest into it?

I have been playing Diablo and Diablo II off and on now for 9 years. I am perterved at the time investment that i have put into that game with no prevail. I have had about 30 different accounts over the years, and about 10 of them were deleted by BNET because i used maphack. I take full responsibility for that, but my problem is that there were times throughout the years that i could not log in for some weeks, and my accounts where deleted. I hate that i invested so much time and effort into building great characters, and obtaining powerful items, and it all got thrown away because i couldn't use a computer for a while. I think that BNET should allow you to keep your accounts active via email if you are not able to log onto BNET servers for any lengthy amount of time. I could understand if a year went by, and there was no activity, but they only give you 3 months (i think). I am having a hard time trying to get back into it, because i am afraid of losing all of my work again.

I've never played on bnet. I've always played Diablo either on my own or (mostly) over a LAN. If you want to play with people that are far away, no problem. Set up a VPN (I've gotten good results with Hamachi) and play with your friends as if it were in a LAN setting. I know that I prefer playing with friends rather than strangers.
