Do you wave at the drivers that you pass on the highway?

Let me clarify just a little. I live in a rural part of north dakot and it is considered nice to wave or tip your fingers at the people that are passing you from the other direction. As sort of wave. Some people only do this to the big rig drivers, but others like myself with extend this to include other people in other vehicles also. I was just wondering if you do this? Do you wave to other people as a small gesture of friendship? Or do you keep to yourself? Do you ignore someone if they wave first? What do you do?

If someone waves to me then I wave back as long as I see them . Often people have waved to me and I have not waved back as I try to keep my eyes focused on where I am going and often miss them , or so they tell me lol . I live in a quiet area as well and people are always waving as a polite gesture . The only time I will wave though is if it is someone that I know . This is not to be rude but just because I don't usually pay much attention to those that I pass on my way :)

I know how you feel I sometimes don't see them waving in time to wave back. Thanks for the response.

My daughter and I tried waving at cars passing on the main road and NOONE waved back. Now on the rarely traveled back road leading to my house, almost everyone waves at each other.

LOL, sounds like you don't live in a very friendly area of off the back road. It all depends around here on whether they are from out of state or not. The in state ones tend to wave more for some reason. lol

When I am local driving or in the car then I will give a wave to everyone .. regardless of whether I know them or not. But when I am driving the truck I am too busy concentrating .. and watching to see what some of the idiots are going to do next. Many people in the country do wave at other drivers .. I find it is more likely to happen in the country than the city .. I travel in both when my job as a truck driver. Country drivers are generally more alert .. and friendly too but city people are usually in a big hurry ... to get to the next red light it seems. The only reason I don't wave in the truck .. is because I have to watch out for what others do .. not everyone is considerate of trucks .. or realise that we cannot stop in a split second .. carting up to 40 tonnes is a lot of weight behind the prime mover .. and that doesn't stop in a hurry. Keep waving to everyone you see .. it is a friendly gesture .. and appreciated by others I reckon.

It must be nice to live in such an open, friendly place. We live on the edge of a city and there are far too many drivers to wave to them all - it would be dangerous. I show my hand in thanks when some driver has kindly let me through a gap too small for us both or let me into a queue in front of them.

In some parts of California you accknowledge other drivers on the freeway you could get yourself killed or just shot at. I live in a city and we do not wave at each other. I will say if I am stoped at a stop light and catch the eye of a child I will wave to them. I will do that to a child in a store or across a room. A lot of adults feel unconfortable waving at each other even in a moving car.

Yes, I lived in arizona for a couple of years in and out of pheonix and know exactly what you are talking about. Sometimes it just isn't feasible to wave. :) At least you are still trying to be friendly to the people that you can be though. That still shows that you have not been completely citified! lol

it is really nice to give a nice gesture to people, but i do think that waving while driving is dangerous. i dont know about north dakot, but in india im sure if u wave while driving on a highway, your hands will be gone, rules are like meant not to be followed here, but now it is fast improving.perhaps a smile would do. when other people look at me i always smile

A smile is just as good for most people. IF you really get into your waving it can be dangerous, but most times it doesn't not distract me overly much. :) Sounds like india is pretty harsh with their punishments.

I generally don't feel comfortable waving at anyone, I don't know why. But, usually, I don't look at drivers in cars rather than the cars themselves. It is sometimes difficult to see who is driving and I don't want to get into an accident looking into other cars. It's funny, in the rural areas I drive in, no one seems to wave unless they know each other. Sometimes, if we are the only two people in the road, we might wave if we see each other.

Thanks for your response. all areas are different. And all people are different too. There is nothing wrong with that.

I live in Central Illinois. I don't wave at anyone that passes me or anyone that I pass. It's just not something we do around here. My dad is a truck driver and people that worked at the same company would wave and he would do the same. Even if he didn't know them or vice versa. Around here you have to keep to yourself because who knows how that person might take it and flip out on you for it. I don't usually ignore anyone if they wave first, but I think to myself who the heck are you?? Because I don't know the person.

That is so nice. It sounds like it is pretty isolated there like it is for me here. Thanks for the response.

We dont do this in our country, and i think in other countries close to us, unless you know the person who is driving. but if they're total strangers, we dont wave. i wonder if you have that practice, you eman you wave at all drivers you pass by? there's alot in the high way...

waay back when (lol) our home was on the outskirts of town. and we pretty much knew everybody. so whenever driving by we would wave or at least nod in acknowledgement. there were much fewer ppl then. now, our home is kind of in the suburbs of a small city. and even though i may know that "so and so" lives somewhere on this street, i dont know their name or which house they live in. every once in a while i spot someone i do know and will wave, but for the most part, too many ppl now. i like all the new stores etc that have come with our town growing, but hate all the new apartment complexes and ppl that are making that growth needed.

Yes it does seem that economic growth seem to push out the neighborliness of a community in time. It is nice that you still will wave to the people that you recognize though. Thanks for the response.

Since my work is driving I wave to other large vehicle drivers and any others that may wave at me. I also wave to people not in their cars since frequently they will wave at me, my company is pretty well known. I also have the added attraction of my two passengers who will wave at everyone if they are not sleeping...lol.

My stepmom did this for many years. I have to admire people that can do that for a living. I honestly don't know if I would personally have the patience. I am running a little low on them now a days. :) It is nice that they like to wave at the other people driving.

I don't wave at drivers I pass on the highway, but I do wave at people I pass on smaller roads. I grew up in a really rural area, and this is just the courtesy I've grown up with. I guess it's also easier to wave at people when your area is so small that you know almost everyone you pass, though. ;)

Yes it does seem easier to wave at people that are people that we know. Thank you for your response.
