Back in the day I was a waitress at Hooters. I made $2.13 an hour so my income depending heavily on tips. I'm not sure what wages are now....Waiters, waitresses and bartenders have a really tough job. As a standard practice I always tip 20% or more especially when the service is exceptionally good. what kind of tipper are you?

I waitressed about 4 1/2 years ago at a little diner. Our pay was $3.15 an hour. My shift covered breakfast AND lunch and I still averaged only $5-$6 dollars an hour total with my tips. I ended up moving back to the kitchen as the cook and got paid more for doing that without any tips. We don't go out to eat very often but when we do it's usually a nicer restaurant so we tip well, unless the service was really bad. If it's just the two of us we usually will leave a $5, if we have all or any of the kids we pay more based on how much the bill was and how sloppy the kids got. Another thing I think is really important is to help make the clean up as easy as possible on the waitstaff. Sometimes that can mean more than a big tip just because it saves them time that they can then spend taking on another table they otherwise would have had to give up to a co-worker.

I should have mentioned that what constitutes a "nicer restaurant" to us is one where the bill for two adults is between $20-30 so a $5 tip is pretty good.

I am a good tipper. I always tip 15% and when the service was excellent it's 20%+. I even tip at coffee shops and other places when tips arent necessary. If someone provides excellent service I thank them with a tip, because I know they are working hard at their jobs.

I always give between 15%-20% depending on the service because I know that at most of the resturants I have frequent they are paid around $2.25. If I enjoyed my service I give 20% if the service was just ok I give 15% even when I am dining alone and the meal is only $20.00.

My two teens are servers at Bob Evans and they make only $2.15 per hour wage and they rely on tips! Yes, I tip, but I tip by the quality of my service. If someone brings my food and never returns, then that is reflected in my tip!

Yes I usually am. I know they make like $2.50 here in Texas, or someting close to that. So I always tip well over the 10-15%. I know they work hard and depend on tips. I have never been a waitress or anything but I know it must be hard =)

I was taught to tip 15% but if the service is good I usually tip a little more.

I am the non-tipper guy. Actually, here in Brazil, almost no one gives out Tips. At least, not in the region I live. For no one, there are not tips here at all. Only sometimes, when the person asks you: "Please, can you give me a tip?". Then, you give that person a tip. But usually, no tip. Nowhere.
