Besides cars or housing, what says 'rich' or 'well off' to you?

OK, now I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, or insinuate anything, so check the chips on the shoulder at the door, OK? LOL
I am not saying people who have these things are rich, or that there is something wrong with not having them - none of that. I just thought I'd ask a little bit of a different question. Besides name brand clothes, a big house, and an expensive car - what says 'rich' to you? For instance, when I think or see people with an automatic sprinkler system, that makes me think they are well off. As crazy as that sounds, and I KNOW it does sound crazy.
So whether you know it is rational or not, what makes you think a person is 'rich' or 'well off?'

That is hard to say. There are different kinds of well off people. There are some really wonderful well off people out there. One thing I think that comes to my mind is when a woman has perfect hair.

I agree 100% - you can just tell when someone has a $100 hair cut.

I think people who have an underground swimming pool or an alarm system in their home are well off. To me those things are pretty expensive and my family can't afford them. :)

Yes, like I said, they can't all apply to everyone. I know people who are comfortable and have alarm systems, yet they are not rich. But I think sometimes we associate alarm systems with the thought that there was really expensive stuff to protect. But in reality, there things are no more important to them, than our stuff is to us.

Definitely big and nice house and expensive car give you a impression about someone being rich.
Other than that I think someone is well off who goes on vacation aborod frquently or you can say goes for world tour. Also people can be considered rich who goes on cruise every now and then. There are some other small things also which can represent people as well off.

I would say those who are on Forbes 50 list. I think it's pretty obvious they have money in abundance. Plus if I see men or women taking their pets to pet salon or pet spa, then I think they are rich. I only go there once or twice a year if I can afford it, my pets never go there at all :)

i go a bit off topic, when you say rich, i normally see people "rich" in personality, good attitude, good character. because for me, a person rich with good character, will always be well off. but a person with bad character will almost always spent all their money.
let's see how to clear this. err... say, some people always have new handphones, new cars, but always borrowing, credit cards, housing loan, loan from loan shark... and that for me is not well off, even though they always seems to have the latest "in" things and gadgets.
i hope you guys understand my oppinion, hahaha, because i don't know what i'm talking about either... honestly, english is my second language.... :D

I totally agree, only1idea. When I think of rich... I'm thinking 'content is in the character' and being rich in love, compassion and character IS the epitome of being 'well-off'.
Usually, when someone has a lot of material possessions, they are lacking in the more important aspects of life. It also means that they have more and higher bills, probably owe creditors and are way over their head in debt.
I'm happy to be richer in the value of life than in monetary value =~)

I hate to stereotype rich people. I mean, what we see on the news and on TV makes us think all rich people are wrapped in material things, but they aren't all like that. I love reading about millionaires and billionaires who give so much money to so many different charities. And they remain silent, so no one will know what they have done. But I totally understand why rich people are labeled. For every kind heart, there is a Paris Hilton.

To me its women with long acrilic nails. They can't even open a can of soda by themselves because it will chip the polish. To me the long fancy nails mean someone who must not have to use their hands much. I sure can't see them doing dishes.

If they've never heard of Walmart or if they've heard of it (because they're friends with the Waltons) but they've never been in it! Anyone who doesn't have to worry about prices or ask how much something costs is most likely rich!

Oh that's funny, I wonder if it was one of those I'm going to be the dumb blonde and ask this stupid question ... or I'm going to prove how rich I am and act like I've never even heard of this place! Either way, she's not highly respected in my book!

I often think that the way the person dresses is usually a sign of weath or lack of. This is not always the case as some people just dont dress according to their money. Yes also the vehicle or vehicles and the home. But I have learned that the material things that one has is usually a sign of being in debt as opposed to being wealthy.
I have now learned that the appearance of fancy vehicles and nice homes usually just mean they are in debt up to their ears. LOL That seems to be the case in our community. People seem to live aboove their means

I know a family that wants everyone to think that they have money when the fact is that they do not. They even borrowed from their 401K to go on an expensive vacation. They are in debt so far that they will never get out and yet they keep borrowing for expensive, unneeded things. Sad really. I know they could not be happy or they would not have to do such a thing. Why is money and peoples opinion so important??

Ok...now I hope this counts because it's something that's attached to the house. LOL When a person has a garage that can hold a minimum of 5 vehicles, that screams RICH to me! Or when you see someone that has a gazillion lights on and around their home at Christmas time. They have to be rich in order to afford the electric bill! LOL

i saw this lady at the vets office. she was about 80 years old, maybe a tad bit younger. she had make up caked on her face, lots of jewelry, perfect hair and nails. expensive looking clothes. her dog was perfectly groomed. he was white with NO dirt. i just KNEW she was bankin'. sure enough in the parking lot she got into a jag.

House may not be a great yardstick, unless it is very big, very well decorated. But a four wheeler is for obvious reason a good yard stick to judge wealth. In my country, it has been like a proverb, that a person, with his own house and car, must be very rich. And whenever I see such a person, undoubtedly I jump to the conclusion that the person must be very rich.

mainly to me it is attitude when it comes to money. or seeing someone having a company plant there flowers and etc. there are lots of riches in the world though. like for me i am rich but not with money. money i am dirt poor. but i have my husband and my kids and we all love each other alot. we spend alot of time with each other and talk. i am rich as far as love goes within my small family to me that is better then money any day. some people are rich with friends. it just goes to show what is more meaningful to you. money, family, friends, love, etc. now when i see a person that is having a party and alot of people show up and everyone is having fun to me that person is rich with friends.

I think it depends on what part of the country you live in. I'm from the suburbs of New York, and expensive cars are all over the place and it definitely doesn't mean these people are rich. I guess when someone can afford to travel, eat in expensive restaurants and send their kids to pricy private schools, then these people must be rich or well off.

What says 'money' to me is the small things. You may not see a person's house or car as they travel about. Their demeanor, and accent are fairly indicitive.
Also, a very dumb person with a nexcellent education (at least on paper), screams money, old, familal, and lots of it! It isn't the same, as telling, with smart folks, because they probably just earned their education through hard work ;-)
Another small way is very good sunglasses, or a bag. With men, I can always tell by his shoes. It's just a gift I have ;-)
